POLL: Fairy-lights: Magical or Muggles?
Comments (11)Magical! If done right, they're great (even if not 'done right' I'm a big fan): But whether or not you think they belong inside, you just can't go wrong with them outdoors......See MorePOLL: Best bedroom colour schemes?
Comments (20)I love some lusciousness in my bedroom ... reds. pinks and oranges! (yes I also have lighter softer colours but like some fun thrown it too otherwise feels so boring). Am surprised that pink wasn't one of the choices! People talk a lot about serenity and seem to forget about other types of energy in the bedroom. It is said that the bedroom is mainly for 2 things both beginning with "S" and yet most people seem to only focus on the sleep bit....See MorePOLL: Have cookbooks gone out of fashion?
Comments (23)I buy one or two cookbooks every year for inspiration (last one was Jamie's Everyday Super Food), but only keep hold of a few old favourites or speciality books, so my cookbook shelf is quite modest. Over the past 5 years I've gone digital and all my favourite recipes, whether they came from cookbooks or magazine clippings originally, are hunted down online to copy into Evernote. Handily, several of the big-name cooks publish their popular recipes on their own websites. This way I've got a bespoke cookbook of my favourite recipes, annotated with my own tweaks, which can be used on a smartphone for ingredient shopping, or an an iPad while cooking. I do find it really satisfying flipping through a new cookbook and tagging the pages of recipes I want to try, so I'll keep buying the cookbooks as well as using online resources....See MoreWould you invest in smart technology if it looked less 'tech-y'?
Comments (27)Communitec, well I for one would like to put in a full electronic home security system with motion activated cameras so if there is an alarm I can view everything on my phone but my house has concrete walls and ceilings so potential installers all want to leave all cables on the surface - even wifi systems require power cables or new batteries way too often. For the same reason the rear speakers for my theatre system are in front with the other speakers - apart from cables to run the wall behind is a glass block feature wall. As for veering off topic goes, well I see people commenting on the appearance of things like thermostats and what functions they have as well as a lot on their aesthetics, so lighting, switches, sockets and control interfaces are on topic really. The fact that a lot of people simply accept these items without thought just goes to show how today's new tech becomes tomorrow's standard and expected items. Where we locate things has changed a lot due to changes in usage patterns and acceptance of items in different settings - phones are rarely in hallways now for example, even though that was a standard location up to the 1970s (and are disappearing in favour of hand phones). My computer always used to be in a room used as an office but I'm typing this on front of the TV on my notebook (no more PC) - tech evolving to suit environment or attitudes evolving to allow tech into what were exclusion zones or perhaps a mixture of the two?...See MoreSarah
