It's a little difficult to see the exact layout from the pics, could you post a floorplan? Just a quick sketch with an idea of measurements, and an indication of where the doors lead. It looks like they have a nice amount of space to work with though.

How do your parents use this space at the moment? Do they eat at the table everyday, occasionally, or never?! Do they watch tv, listen to music, have friends over? I think I see a gate on the kitchen door - is this for grandchildren or pets?

The sideboard is lovely, your mum did a good job I think so it would be a good place to start when thinking about the style of the room.

Hi there - thanks for commenting. Here's the (I apologise) very rough sketch - I'll find out sizes but yes there is a reasonable amount of space - hopefully the layout picture gives you more of a feel for the space. To answer your questions;

The dining room table is used for breakfast and dinner every day - big family dinners are important in our family so I think my mum would prefer it was easier to accommodate more people on the table - what they have currently was given to them free so they would be willing to replace for something suited them better.

They tend to use the living room area for relaxing in the evening - they have a separate TV room so this area is more for reading/listening to music. My personal thoughts on the sofa area of the space rather than the dining room is it doesn't feel that relaxing or cosy - I do think some thicker luxurious curtains might help that and personally think they should get rid of the door with glass panes in as I think this makes the porch extend into this area and feel a bit like a walkway.

The stairgate is for their pets currently - however my little boy is 6 months so will be necessary for him at some point too.

Yes, pictures are helpful to draw people in. Dark would be fine - if on a darker wall. How about sticking with the grey of sofa, dark grey theme and then have the two longer walls to work the proportions and add some light. Pic attached. Alternatively, pic attached, you could do all light neutral walls but then crate a different effect with ceiling to floor dark panel curtains to add luxury and add the darker end wall effect! Just ideas. All the best and I hope the advice keeps coming! :)

In the picture above I personally would have a different sofa or chairs. The wood matches and goes together nicely with it being open plan but I think the chairs and sofa matching (styles not colours) is slightly too much.

Hi. Personally I'd put a slatted room divider (just the unit width) at the end of the sink run to allow light and zone the kitchen area slightly. (I will try and find a picture showing the same in a similar kitchen). Assuming the fridge isn't staying, I'd just buy a white one so it blends in, maybe like a retro style one as they look a bit prettier. I'd also opt for a round table. You could paint the wall (and rad) behind the table a darker/warmer colour and add art. Hang the light low over the table to zone it and maybe have a mirror or mirror tiles on the left wall. You could also consider acrylic chairs as they don't visually fill the space. I'd go for a wider curtain pole to maximise light coming in. Sofa, choose something on legs with narrow arms, being able to see the floor will make the room bigger and maximise seating. I also wouldn't choose anything dark as it could take over the room, just use dark/warm colours for cushions and throw if wanted. There are plug in wall lights around which won't take up any floor space. I don't know if you need storage but you should be able to fit a sideboard between the dining and living area? Re shopping suggestions, you don't have any ideabooks set up so could you give people an idea of styles and colours you like?

Hi Danielle. Are your parents literally looking to change everything then?? I can see your mum likes greys and inky blues, which way does the room face? Rather than use the darker paints on the half walls, which I think divides the room, consider using on the fireplace ŵall ( do you have a pic of this?) and under the stairs. I'd keep the other room light for reading.As they have a separate living room, I'd reduce seating, a small 2/3 sofa under the window but pulled away from the ŵall. Full length curtains could look good here but it depends if there's room when the sofa is pulled away, maybe check when you have measurements and go for a slimmer table. I'd keep the curtains light to tie in with ŵall colour. Where the other sofa is have an accent chair in the corner with a floor lamp behind. Where the mirror is I'd put a low wide bookcase with matching table lamps and a mirror over the top. I'd also go for a smaller patterned rug as its hiding the lovely floor. I agree re the porch door but it's letting a lot of light in, maybe they can cover with cardboard and assess the impact! Are there any pendant lights at all? I'd go for an extending dining table so they can accommodate more guests, it looks as if they could pop the extra (smaller) dining chairs in corners? It doesn't look as if full length curtains would hang properly unless the rad was moved? Perhaps a vase of faux flows on the dining table ( good quality!). The art looks good but I don't think the ones next to the window work so would look at some of the positions and maybe create gallery walls. design wise maybe modern English country?? Add the pattern and accent colour in their accessories, soft furnishings. It looks a lovely room though

Hi Danielle, I think Minnie has hit the nail on the head there with reducing the seating. The corner sofa is just too big and having it pushed against the wall makes the space feel smaller. I wonder, if you had the small sofa under the window, would a chair fit opposite it, in the corner against the half wall? This would keep all of the seating toward that side of the room which makes sense because of the front door. You could add a large footstool/ottoman instead of the table, in a rich colour like plum or burgundy.

Where the small sofa is now, I would position the sideboard. It would be seen and admired by all coming in the door and would function as a place to keep keys, mail etc. (in beautifully co-ordinated bowls/boxes of course). A fabulous lamp and a mirror above would complete it.

It would be a pity to lose the light from the glass porch door, so why not refinish the wood in white to match the architrave?

In the dining room, go for an extending table as Minnie says. If your Mum isn't too attached to the chairs, I'd consider replacing them with something more slimline but elegant, so that you can fit more in for a big crowd! Hope some of this helps...
