Narrow living area

Thinking of buying a house dilemma with living room very narrow 14' 10" x 9' 9" there is a hall with stairs adjacent to wall of living room so cannot remove. The other side of hall is an integral garage which can be made into a 2nd living room but this will also be similar size. Any ideas on alterations? Not sure if to purchase?

You could knock through to the kitchen? And switch the dining room and living room. Opens up the space.

Hello Dennis,

You could actually have the entire ground floor as open plan. With open staircase.. Structural engineers to survey and you should look into regulations and any planning apps as soon as possible.. but in this way you will create a flow that greatly enhances the use of space. If you were to have an L shape kitchen (there is another idea after this one) taking out utility and cloakroom internal walls, you could actually put in two more double doors where the window is situated in the kitchen. So the kitchen goes along the wall where it is and round where the garage/cloakroom wall is situated.. Brick up the doorway in utility and put a window to match that of the cloakroom... Possibly a bit of a bigger job in the first instance but worth it in the longer term.

OR, if you intend to make the garage part of the living space then remove the internal walls and instead create a galley kitchen that runs down the entire length, or as much as you wish of the external wall of garage space.. This would be my preferred along with the other suggestions re open staircase and additional french doors..

This would also lend itself beautifully to the design as I do not really like to suggest L shape kitchens. Galley is far sleeker and chic(er) Would be room for an island where you could situate range oven if you want to cook and view the rest of the space... Overhead extraction would make this possible and in addition you would have room for all the appliances to run along the rear wall.. You could even have two islands one for sink and preparation and other for cooking and eating/dining if you don't situate everything along the rear wall.. Many ideas here for you to consider. Think how you cook/eat and dining table situated near one of the double doors is also lovely especially for entertaining...

How about putting the chest of drawers under the window so it is visible when you first walk into the room. Then put the desk where the chest of drawers is currently. I would then get a large storage TV unit for the end wall where the dark furniture is. This would be best in white or taupe to keep it light in that end of the room. You could even get this made in the same units as the kitchen cupboards. I would buy new 3 seater sofas in a traditional or classic style to suit the antiques in a beige colour linen and then two armchairs in a patterned material - floral or stripe to suit your personal taste. I would keep the sofas in the same position and place the two armchairs facing the TV unit, side by side. You would need to make sure the armchairs were placed so they were easy to walk around and they would need to be small but comfortable. Keep the table where it is and update the lamp to a more statement piece. An orchid (fake or real) on the chest of drawers would add a touch of class. I quite like the rug that is there as it goes nicely with the antiques and you could bring out the blues with a few duck egg blue coloured cushions, and a duck egg blue roman blind would soften the window. Just some ideas.... I'd love to see photos when you've finished, it's a lovely space!

id do this; make the trough into a bench and put some outdoor cushions on it, paint the neighbouring extension a light colour, get someone to make a wall hung 'table' that drops flat to the wall on the side of the house (useful for those coffee mornings) that is painted the same colour-above the 'table' put up a trellis also painted the same colour-there are some great hanging planters that could be hung here and you wouldn't have to stick to filling them with only plants. we have a narrow path similar to this-wasted space is what I call it-and thought of putting a shed within its confines. after seeing your picture its made me decide to do something similar. cheers, thanks for putting on the picture and making a light bulb go on in my head.x

The best place for a tv is on the furthest wall or on the media console against that wall. Because of the fireplace on the right, I’d place the sofa against the left wall opposite the wall with windows and two chairs opposite the sofa. That way when you are on the sofa you can watch the tv, see the fireplace, have a comfortable conversation with people opposite and have a good view out of the window. I don’t know how much space is around the fireplace, but I’d have another chair with a footstool on the right to the sofa facing diagonally facing the windows. I would also make the furthest wall a focal point and add a storage with cabinet lighting in the alcove and visually balance the rest of the wall. Also it’s a good idea to add a gallery wall on the wall opposite windows and a mirror wall decoration and console table on the wall nearest to the entrance door. Something like this Have you chosen a sofa yet?

Hello. I just spotted this and thought I would jump in. Using artwork that is big sounds counter intuitive but actually makes the space look much bigger. I would consider finding a wonderful large artwork to fill the whole wall at the end. It will give your eye something to follow and will work to the rooms strengths (it's length) rather than it's width. I charge £150 for 10 ideas for a space. It might be find to find the artwork first and then dress the room using the colours in the piece. A small arm chair at the end under the artwork would dress it nicely. Sounds like you have to spend a lot to make this the house you want- if you added that money to the purchase price could you buy a better house for you?
