How long did it take you to paint this mural? Please advise!

Hi Matt, that one took around 18 hours and was painted over 3 days.

Pity you have decided against glass in favour of tiles. We have just done our kitchen and I wanted an easy-to-clean surface for the splash back, so the rough surface of grouting around tiles, and also the indentations on some patterned tiles (which collect grease and grime) ruled them out for me! I went for glass, which the manufacturers matched exactly to the duck egg paint colour on the other walls (just gave them a product code of the paint), and although the initial outlay for the glass was expensive, the surface is so brilliant to keep clean and it looks fab as well. I would definitely recommend, and you could match it to, say, your lovely pink/purple ceiling lights ...

Hi. If you paint the end ŵalls either a darker or warmer shade it will go some way to correcting the proportions of the room (Or if you like stripes you could add a striped rug or wallpaper). I must admit I would probably keep the chimney breast whether you change the fire or not, they add character and you can add consoles, cabinets, chairs etc which tend to look better in alcoves than flat ŵalls. I would also use a textured wallpaper in the long ŵall colour to add interest. I think the issue is the lack of furniture in the middle of the room which would make it feel wider. Could you add a coffee table? Is the sofa to scale in the 1st pic? I would pull it away from the ŵall even if it just inches (will help with radiator too, is that the only one you have in the room as it doesn't seem big enough?). I had a look in your Ideabook and it looks as if you want a windowseat? If so, i'd move the sofa so it's opposite the fire and put the armchair at the opposite end of the room and use a rug to define that seating area with the front feet of the seating on the rug. If you want the tv over the fire I'd put it on a tilting, swinging arm.

Hopefully I can find one like yours Sonia, but don't know how as I can't even trust the reviews anymore. He did forget to pass the second coat in 2 walls in the upstairs bathroom and left a big mess in a wall in my room which he repaired part of it because I told him. I get he is a handyman not a plasterer and decorator but he advertises on his page he has over 35 years experience in plastering and painting, so the job should be at an acceptable standard. Colourhappy, thank you for responding, it gave me confidence to ask him to re do the plastering. At the end he accepted a reduced price, myself and my partner will finish the job!

I worry that the quoted £60k will leave you with a warm safe house with a new kitchen….. but no floor coverings, no window treatments, no light fittings and no furniture. So perhaps the thing to do is cost up all those finishing jobs and then see what’s left for the builder. You might conclude that some of the wardrobes and bedroom carpets can stay at least for a while so that you can concentrate budget on rooms you are going to use more. (That flowery bedroom carpet is probably still in amazing condition and the fancy panelling on the wardrobes can likely be stripped off for a more contemporary look). You should also prioritise the heating and wiring and any repairs. You should also do all the dusty jobs now….. so I would probably put a door into the kitchen opposite the front door, and take down the internal wood cladding. I would probably strip out the skirtings, architrave, doors and banisters and replace them all with new as the originals will need significant time and effort to get looking good- plus your new wood floors will have tidier edges if you put the skirtings on after the floors are laid. And although on other another thread there has been some discussion about the total costs of some of the jobs I suspect that there is an economy of getting it done quickly and moving in.
