Oak stairs & floor - oak overload?

We will be having an oak & glass staircase fitted for our bungalow loft conversion. We'd decided not to have oak flooring as we thought it might be too much wood. However, I can't decide whether a slate effect tile or a cream / neutral tile would work best. Having searched for oak staircases on here, most seem to have matching wood floors which look better than I'd expected! know it's probably personal opinion but really need some help to decide on tiles or oak as the floor needs to go down soon! The hall space is 4m x 3.3m and is open to the roof with a small galleried landing. It will be painted a shade of white. Thanks.

Hello,

If you are doubtful about the oak floor, than you could go for neutral tiles. Some warm grey would definitely look nice with the natural colour of oak. Images I listed for you are perfect examples.

Also, if you have oak doors as well you may prefer to actually go for tiles. Personally, I wouldn't go with cream tiles, gray would look better.

Hi. What flooring will you have elsewhere? Do you want to try and coordinate with that? I think oak floors can look good with an oak staircase but what doors will you be having re oak overload? have you thought about a limestone floor something in shades of pale grey and honey. I think it would work really well with the staircase but it depends what style you're after, maybe it's a bit too traditonal?

Thanks Minnie for your response. Intending to have oak doors. Rest of downstairs is oak effect quickstep laminate flooring. Too big an area to afford all real oak unfortunately! Upstairs will be grey carpet which is why I'm unsure about cream coloured tiles & was initially considering slate effect but worried it will look too cold. Not keen on natural stone flooring because I'm worried about the upkeep. I'm in a bit of a muddle & feeling the pressure to make decisions!

Hello loubrad1973, I would suggest a wood flooring that continues from your hall into the living room.... Are the sofas next to each other for a reason.. You could split them up and have 1 in the other room? I don't see why silvery grey won't go with brown or plum... Have found a couple of cushions which I think you might like 1 is lighter and offers contrast, you could also add a bit of plum... I'd put 2 on one side rather than all the way along... Also you can add to the feel by finding a nice silvery grey plain throw.... Folded over one arm, or on the other folded over the back a little to one side or layer 2 colours... Dark grey and light silvery grey with accents of plum.. :)) ...

We have the same type of panelling in our hall and it was oak the same as yours with an oak floor. It just started to feel quite dark and drab but we hesitated to to do anything for fear of messing it up. In the end we painted all the panelling in Farrows French grey, left the doors and floors wood and painted the sides of our staircase and the spindles in Farrows clunch but left the newel posts and the bannister rail as wood - looks like a different hallway - I have never regretted painting it

I would paint the skirting boards in pointing to make the ceilings look higher (perhaps the coving too). Why not use a complimentary paint for the doors, maybe something Oxford stone (will appear a bit lighter on wood). I actually quite like the conservatory but you could pick another colour for the stairs? I would just say if you’ve done the whole house in pointing make sure you’re 100% happy as it’s a lot easier to change walls than wood!

How many doors will be off the hall as it may be a little too much oak but will you use a runner/rug? I'm sure the laminate will look just as good! What sort of slate effect were you looking at? Some of the light or honey toned ones would look good but I think the darker grey could look a little cold. I haven't found natural stone an issue in the past, just make sure whatever cleaning fluid you use doesn't have acid in. Or have a look at limestone effect? I only suggest limestone as the honey should work with the wood and the grey will work will the carpet but you can also get similar slate effect. My search has only yielded these so far! http://www.alistairmackintosh-porcelain.co.uk/sahara-natural-stone-porcelain-tiles.html I also spotted an encaustic style tile in your Ideabook, is it worth looking at these?

Thanks Minnie & Izabella for your ideas - all very much appreciated! There will be 3 doors leading off hallway. I'd probably have a rug or runner of some sort as it's a good sized hallway.
Unfortunately the encaustic tiles are a no-go for anywhere in the house as my husband hates them!
Minnie, I love the look of the limestone effect tiles as they include the grey as well as the warmer tones -Thank you for searching them out. I had seen proper limestone tiles which I liked the look of but was put off by how easy they seemed to break and hadn't found a limestone effect tile I liked.
Izabella, thanks for the photos too, it's great to see different ideas.
I now have so many tile samples, there's probably enough to tile the whole floor with samples! No wonder I'm confused!

Bad luck re the encaustic tiles! Is that any style of tile? I'm glad you liked those limestone ones, I do think they would work well. I must admit we had a limestone patio in our old garden and it took 4 deliveries of the stone to have a full set as so many were broken, we ended up being refunded the whole amount :) but I thought we were just unlucky or lucky as it turned out! If you were to go for the oak laminate I would just thinking about cleaning it unless it's the waterproof type. As it's a hallway it will get dirtier and i don't think you're really meant to wash the laminate with a mop unless it is wrung out really well as water will get in the grooves

We weren't planning to have the laminate in the hallway, just the rest of downstairs. The new stairs will need to sit on whichever floor we choose so

Posted before I finished! we need a good solid floor which is why we're planning on tiles or real wood for the hallway. Not so sure the staircase would sit so well on laminate.
