How can I make the room look modern and get some storage

I'm moving to this house in a couple of weeks and this is the main bedroom. It has no storage except for a built in cupboard with a rail which will not hold all of my clothes.
Any ideas on how to modernise the room and give me lots of storage.
I have about £1500 - £2000 to spend and that include buying a new bed. Would people suggest getting in someone for internal design ideas and project management?

if it's possible, consider replacing the curtains, as those look fine, but not modern. One option is to get full-length straight curtains. Another is to use roman blinds.
also, you could repaint the off-white wall, or both walls, perhaps white or light grey.
as for storage, you can buy a bed consisting of a mattress and instead of a ordinary base, a structure with pull out draws.
If you do get more cupboards, you could get some with mirrored doors, for the impression of a larger room

Hi, yes, I suggest you hire a pro. Do some research, and be very clear on your budget. What is your budget in US dollars? That will effect the type of service you choose. As an interior designer I save people a lot of money as well as design a beautiful , functional space.

Leave the brick inside the fireplace but maybe tone it down a little. Get the rest of the brick plastered over, including the little display recesses which are very dated. Change the tiles to slate (still could be tiles to make it cheaper) and it would look so much better.

So the sink and oven position are fixed- no problem. For me the things that stop this feeling industrial are the suburban elements such as the conventional sink with drainer, the drawer line cabinets, the open display unit, the hanging baskets of flowers and the chimney extractor. In my opinion a little exposed brick isn’t enough to pull this into an industrial look when there is so much conventional stuff. Personally I think you should be looking to add a chunky sink and taps. Build a chunky chimney to hide an extractor, choose cabinets that are random sizes and avoid having lots of matching cabinets. Consider non matching cabinets for the wall- personally I would go tall. And as far as decoration I think instead of flowers you should be thinking Iron furniture or clocks, antique mirror, tarnished brass, weather wood, reclaimed slate, anything vintage, etc, etc. Your visual doesn’t show lighting /. Consider the best way to do this and think Anglepoise lamps, wall hanging lanterns and oversized ceiling fixtures. I also think that if you want to go industrial you should cover up the floor and a click together floor or a vinyl are cost effective ways of doing this

hi Neverforever, I think you really need to repair the entire side of the house- looking at the photos you provided, the entire side of the house look as though you have a number of spalled bricks,which have suffered from frost damage. whatever you decide as a finish , you should address these in the final decision to protect your home. I think that the amount of space lost at the side cladding the house in timber , would not lose a lot of space in the driveway. you have pipes at the side protruding at low level. Can you advise on the width of the space between the two houses. you own half of this width and have a right of way over the neighbouring house for driving your car, so this shouldn't really cause issues with the neighbour. A timber clad would provide a modern update to the look of the porch, whilst the render and paint would be a simpler update. you might want to look at external insulation and a render finish to the entire house. This is something the government is looking to push for improving the energy use of the housing stock in the uk. best Rowland

My first thoughts are: 1. Create a full height built-in cupboard with doors around the boiler/electric, with a couple of shelves and potentially a rail to hang coats. 2. Relocate the dryer (is it blocking the electric meter cupboard?) or sell and get a washer/dryer combi? 3.Plaster the walls. If you're on a budget and handy, you can dry-line the walls (battens or dot & dab some plasterboard to the walls) then tape and fill the joints and paint (popular in America) without the cost of paying a plasterer to skim. 4. Can't see what's on the floor but a good coir entrance matt to fill the whole space would work.

It is not clear if you have bought the property or how long you intend to stay there however I agree with the mirrored wardrobes. iKEA do some very reasonable ones which can be reassembled elsewhere if need be..

It looks like there may already be roller blinds to match the curtains...? If money is tight (given that a decent bed could cost the best part of £1,000) you could just lose the draped pelmets. If you are renting you may need to replace them when you leave.

I think the whole room should be painted a neutral very pale shade which tones with the curtains and above all you must lose that awful carpet. For budget sake I suggest a pale white grained or lime-washed laminate which can in fact be laid straight over carpet and this will aid sound insulation. You can get the 'click' variety which is a bit more expensive but it can be reused.

Any spare money can be spent on bedside cabinets, a large picture above the bed (?), a small dressing table (?), a small chair (?), wonderful bedding, a throw and some cushions to bring the whole look together.

i would leave the chandelier (unless you hate it) as they are quite popular at present and you will have the additional expense of an electrician if you change it.

Personally I think your bed get is too tight to do it all.
I think if you recarpet, buy a bed and paint the walls you will have spent all your budget.
Later you can get the wardrobe you want and replace the curtains- personally I would have full length curtains that make the windows match better.
For short term storage I would see what internet bargains are available and if they don't match the scheme then consider storing some of your clothes in a different room.

This can easily be done for the budget, by using ikea as per above. Carpet and curtains / blinds = £300-400, ikea bed and bedding / mattress about £400-500, ikea pax wardrobe £400 if you get a decent one with good fixtures. Paint, £50.

i would suggest some MDF units along one of the walls built to your design they are a great option for any room, you can then paint them either the same as the wall colour to help lose then or bring them out in white to make a feature of them
