I'm looking for a suggestion for a shrub about 6 foot tall that will tolerate about 5 hours of sun a day but be OK if the overshadowing trees to the south-west keep growing and incrementally give more shade over the coming years. (I'd like a semi-permanent solution).

Fruits or flowers preferred but maybe nice dark leaves would be good enough.

I suspect not enough sun for a dwarf fig or a large rose bush? Too much sun for a hydrangea or camellia? I think all "small" magnolias are still too big.

I am looking for a semi-permanent, low chemical alterative. I am not opposed to pruning or other maintenance. I don't mind waiting a few yrs for it to grow.

Am I going to be stuck with a butterfly bush?

All suggestions appreciated.

Just a suggestion, a "Chindo" viburnum. It is evergreen, actually prefers only part sun, blooms in spring with the most intoxicating white flowers. Nice shrub, easily pruned, grows rather fast if happy. It is hardy to zone 8, but you may want to try it, it might make it in your zone.

Even planting Elephant ears, you will have to water them, you could get the big black ears, they will love part sun, a little composted cow manure, they will get the size you want, and then for the winter, dig the bulbs up and stick in garage til the next spring. They are awesome when they get big.

If 6 ft is your preferential height and the bed or border has the depth for something equally wide you might like the burgundy leafed loropetalum which brings color to the spot when the shrub isn't blooming. I was going to recommend vitex, which when kept to under 8 feet is a pruning issue at least twice a year. Neat thing is when the first blooms are spent to seed, trimmed off the side shoots develop for reblooming as often as you trim off the spent blooms.

Vitex is a favorite because it's a feeding station for all the pollinators. Not certain that it wouldn't require at least 3 hours of direct sun.

Chinese jessimine is a nice almost everblooming (yellow and very fragrant) shrub that fits your 6' height preference. It also gets 6' wide and wants regular watering until established.

Hello donned2004, Well you could remove all the things from the hearth.. So it has more space.. Hang the mirror and paint the chimney breast a nice colour to bring the fireplace into full focus.. If you wanted to have an even bigger recess.. you could open the fire out up to the sides of the wooden surround.. So taking out the 30's tiles.. Make sure the lintel is in place or doesn't need replacing and keep the surround it's rather nice.. Remove the current tiled hearth if you chose to open it out more.. and install a flat piece of slate.. So then you would have an open brick recess and a lovely iron basket could sit nicely inside for logs! Another idea to continue into the room.. might be to look at painting the woodwork a colour to compliment any wall colours you have.... Some lovely painted floorboards, or parquet or a natural Jute or Coir flooring if you have not already decided upon something.. : ))

I laid my own last year. Like others, I also put sub-base down first (on top of levelled ground), compacted it (hired a machine), ensured it was level, laid sand over the top, then a good weed-proof membrane on top of that. I used one large section (to save gluing), tagged edges into the ground (around perimeter of the grass), then 'dressed' it with sharp/fine sand (many neglect this but it helps prevent flattening of the grass) -- do this when dry of course. The kids love it and, they don't get muddy! The only maintenance I've had to do so far is sweep leaves up. The garden's just about getting there (had to show pics as quite proud of the transformation!). Addition of sub-base (MOT type 1) below: Levelled, compacted, then sand laid level (and, again, compacted) on top of MOT1: Once that was done, laid weed-proof membrane on top: Grass went on top of the membrane (retained around the perimeter). 'Dressed' the grass with sharp/fine sand after that (when dry!). (Will finish adding plants when spring's properly here!)

For me, art really matters. It has to mean something to me or otherwise what's the point? My home is the one place I get to be surrounded by people and objects that I love so I couldn't put up something just because the colours matched. I've got mix of prints, originals, and even things cut out of catalogs, you'd be surprised what a home-made mount and the right frame can do! 😁 That said, it's a very personal decision and if you don't feel compelled to agonise over what a piece means to you then don't. life's too short. If it fitting your scheme and looking good it was what need right now then that's totally okay too.

Hi there, I think that unfortunatelly, any temporariamente solutions that you try (like the decking tiles) will not look very good, especially if the patio is now uneven (so not a good investment). Would you maybe like to build a patio somewhere else in the garden? I am assuming that this patio is as you leave the house (and hence part of it would be lost with the extension). I dont know the size of your garden, but have you considered a second patio area (maybe to catch the sun at another part of the day or even to seat on shade)? This second patio area could be your main seating area untill you finish the extension abd then be part of the final design when you get to it. If you would like to have a design drawn for your garden so that you have the bigger picture of how it would look and dont get lost on the way I could help. There are roses that do fine with some shade or even more. If you ask on the Rose Forum, I am sure you would get some suggestions. I can't because I have a full sun yard, all day, every day.

As a professional landscape designer, there are several possibilities, but one of my favorites that offer both texture and fragrance (light citrus) is the Fragrant Tea Olive. They do grow taller, but keep them hedged back to your desired height. Also Upright Yew or Taxus intermedia 'Hicksii' is perfect for an evergreen hedge. It's a classic simple design.
