Small bathroom complete renovation - with photos - comments, ideas?

I'm probably asking for advice a little late considering that my plumber just started to demolish my bathroom :) But probably because there's no way back now, I'm starting to feel a little concerned about my choices.

Passionate people... let me know what you think! :)

So... this is my bathroom:

The bathroom is really small (2350x1500mm + shower box 700x800mm)... so small that the door doesn't even open completely because it hits the bath.

What I plan to do is a full refurbish:

- move the door opening to the center of the room and replace it with a sliding-pocket door.

- new freestanding bath positioned under the window.

- basin and loo moved to the left wall.

- hopefully enlarge the shower box a little.

What do you think? Ideas? Suggestions? Would you swap the position of the toilet with the basin? Below is my current (not final) shopping list:

Hi Izabella, thanks for your input.

The toilet should be a wall-hung model... My hope is that it would be slightly concealed by the wall and instead the first thing that you would see from the door would be the basin and bath.

Unfortunately I have to use the left wall for the toilet because of how the joists are positioned and the solid wall around the shower.

Hi. The layout looks good to me although the loo is by the door it won't be the first thing that is seen. Have you allowed space for a freestanding tap for the bath? What are you doing with the ŵall for the ŵall hung loo? I don't know if you're fitting a new shower or what the water pressure is like but the shower tray is quite slim, i would just check with the plumber as I had a powerful shower installed in my last house and the tray I'd chosen wasn't deep enough so I'd have flooded the place with my choice! I also like your choice of vanity but would just think about that bottom shelf being open if you don't want bits on display. I'd think about a large mirror to increase the feeling of space and light. Are you adding a towel rail? Is that what's opposite the basin? Will that be ŵall hung too? What areas are you tiling?

The position of the loo and basin is actually something I'm a little confused about.

The tap will be in projecting from the wall, underneath the window.

The wall hung loo is still a mystery. The plumber will give me some options later today after the demolition. If we can, I will putt a very slim frame+cistern in the partition wall. If we can't I will opt for the same model but closed coupled. It has a very small footprint anyway:

Thanks for the advice about the shower. Really appreciated! I didn't think about it and will ask to my plumber.

The bottom shelf is actually one of the reasons why I've chosen it... I'm trying to opening up the space by creating "empty" boxes. I can see some nice, fluffy towels going in there.

The mirror. I really like something like these:

Yes, the towel rail is the one opposite to the basin. I'm considering underfloor heating too.

Still undecided on the tiling... I keep going back and forth between full wall-to-wall tailing or only the floor + shower box. What would you do?

Hi Senspasce and thank you my husband works for a large tile manufacturer and the tiles where purchased on slight seconds and a great tiler who works all over the world did the tiling beautifully. The design was copied from the company brochure so I knew it was foolproof design in its day which was over 20yrs ago so not done so bad really certainly had my moneys worth. The window is very heavily obsurced glass with leaded design so does not need blinds which cannot be fitted as casement to window is not deep enough I have had curtain treatment on expandable rod but like the light and openness. I prefer a bath we use to have shower on bracket with a shower curtain when I had new mixer and taps I did away with them to open the room up and getaway from water mold building up we use bath mat on floor when showering and not a problem with no screen a lot less cleaning too never a problem without them.

great work! my only criticism, but this is very personal, the mirror is a bit high for a pertit woman like me. once had a builder installing a nice Bauhaus's mirror, half sunk into the wall, all wired up, looks great in photo, until I stood in front and can not see my chin. Have to strip all and re do. may be OK for you guys, but still better if can see your six packs in the mirror!

I have lots of opinions about what I might do. I would use a deep colour on the walls- either as a tile or paint in untitled areas. I think the way you avoid it feeling tight is to keep it simple as you already have pattern in mind for the floor, I say choose a large wall tile and on the sink wall have a big mirror. I also think you can make the room seem bigger by getting rid of clutter which means ensuring you have lots of storage and I would put a cupboard around the boiler to hide it. If it were me I would be thinking about the roll top bath and considering if it limits the opportunity for a shower. You should also think about if you ever intend to replace the window as it would be better to do it now before you retile. Best of luck

Hello,

I think if I was in your case I would put the toilet where you wish to put your sink and I would place the sink next to it, so when I open the door is not the toilet what I see first. While playing with ideas, I also thought you could put the toilet where the shower is as it is quite small and that way you could gain bigger space for a comfy shower, maybe a walk in one.

Hi. Sorry I didn't get notification of your comment.. What did the plumber say re the loo? I like the Clarendon house mirror. If you look at your 2nd link they have boxed in all the way up to the bath, would this be feasible with a recessed mirror although I'm not sure how much space the cistern needs? The vanity would look good with towels, I'm just a very messy person in terms of cupboards hence my comment! I must admit other than in some cases, atm (!) I personally prefer bathrooms that aren't completely tiled. Were you planning on using the same tiles for the shower? I do think you are going to have to tile around the loo, vanity and bath though for hygiene and waterproofing? It seems like a half ŵall may be the option or a mix of?

A wall hung toilet would work well. In worts case if it takes attention away you can always create a focal point to look at, some decoration always lifts up the look of any room.

YEAY... we can put the wall-hung toilet with no extra boxing required. I'm still very concerned because I'm not 100% sure it will hold the weight. But I have to trust the professionals :)

The last tiles are lovely. I am not sure about the sliding door though. Sort of reminds me of OAP council housing & I don't mean that as a slur to anybody. Can you no have a normal door ?
