Floor staining

2 years ago I refurbished original 200 year old piranha pine wooden floors. They look lovely but have too much of a yellow colouring to them even after time. I would like to stain them dark and give them a matt finish but don't know where to start - any ideas?

Lucky you - discovering a Parquet floor, this one is Pine, laid herringbone design, it has been previously sanded - not sympathetically though, you can see some chatter marks. Don't worry they will all come out - if you have it professionally sanded - Parquet is a specialist sand as the grain of the wood is not in all the same direction. It can be stained - I would reccommend a water based stain and finished in a clear matt lacquer. If you wanted to paint it white, you would need to treat all the knots with knot primer, followed by a floor primer, then a couple of coats of paint ie Farrow & Ball Personal recommendation a clear finish to highligh the knots and grain of your wood - using white accents Good Kuck - Elaine

Dark or Light wooden floor

Hi there, We have a couple of darker option, I believe when going for a dark flooring it tends to create a more warm and cosy feel. We have a couple of option in stock that may be something of interest, these options are engineered boards. The first option we would have is the Pyrenees Smoked Oak, this is a stunning wide oak board. With the wider planks it creates depth to the room like no other board. On another note, it is also available inHerringbone style. The second option would be our gorgeous Hand scraped Geneva oak, with the deep rich colour, it gives the room a fantastic rich feel. The Third option we would have in stock would be our Oslo Oak, This board is relatively dark compared to the boards mentioned above. Do you have an idea on the exact colour you would be looking for? Hi Elaine, Our suggestion is, do not try because whatever you do will be worse. You can damage the wood flooring this way, then it will be hard to restore to original condition. Woodcraft Flooring has oiled wood flooring by hand for 30 years. We combine colours and stains we have tried before to make Mahogany lighter this did not work and therefore we had to restore the floor. You can restore the floor back to new that is what I suggest to do if your floor is looking old or in a bad state. Thank you Kind Regards Mursel

Not sure on the exact science of this but use Tea! From what I can gather is that new pine lacks in tannin which is present in most woods particularly woods like oak, mahogany etc. but not so much in new pine. Over time the tannins do balance out but could take many years hence why the older floorboards (which are lovely btw) have a much more even tone. Solution is to wash freshly sanded new pine with a fairly strong brew of black tea (quantity/ratio not sure). Tea contains tannin so basically you’re adding it to the wood before staining, varnishing, oiling and so on. Might be a bit late if you’ve already oiled the zebra floor boards as it needs to absorb into the wood but thought I’d let you know if you plan to do steps. Do bear in mind that this finish may appear darker so perhaps use a lighter stain and absolutely test first.
