Perennial are so easy to maintain, just cut them back in Feb before any bulbs come up, otherwise just pull out any weeds you can see. Hope that's helpful.

Don't be fooled by the concept of low maintenance gardens! All gardens require some form of upkeep. From the picture I would have thought there is an awful lot more out of view so would suggest that perhaps not high maintenance, but to keep it looking good will take time, effort and of course funds!

I would look into a honeycomb base for the parking area to retain gravel. Planning often don't allow gravel in front driveways as loose stones can be a nuisance. At the same time councils are trying to dissuade people from putting a hard surface down that doesn't allow the water to soak away. A casual, no names given, enquiry at your council may enlighten you! I'd render and paint the walls around the parking area and encourage plants to cascade over the walls to soften them. If you have room you can maybe put a few pot plants around but may not be advised if you live in an area where people help themselves! At least with pots you can change/move them around with the seasons. The lawn area I would personally get rid of. If you're keen on gardening you could plant up with a variety of plants. Is it a sunny area? Could it be used as a herb garden, although best near the kitchen, as long as it is a sunny spot? But you might want to consider if the local dog and cat neighbourhood would use it as a toilet! If they might, gravel covering might not be a good idea. Having said that I created a herb garden at the front of a previous home but the cats didn't use the gravel as a litter tray. Grasses are good but there are also plenty of low 'prostrate' type plants that make good ground cover so will reduce the need for weeding. I have a similar size front garden and I'm going to look into getting a small specimen tree. Something that won't block out the light but is a decent size (10ft?) but something that has a nice shape so I can adorn it with lights at Christmas. If it has nice blossom and/or beautiful fruits (edible or not) then that would be a bonus. I will get rid of my grasses and under plant with something suitable. Good luck.

I agree with Bathroom Eleven... A living wall there would really set off the lovely new patio area! Herbs wood be great to enjoy both to cook with and to look at. Lavender will give a lovely purple colour during the flowering stage :) You could even DIY the living wall by simply attaching window box style planters to the fencing yourself. If you would like maintenance free, you could also consider artificial plants to create the look without the fuss. The market now has plenty to choose from and although not cheap initially, they will last for years to come without even watering :)

7m x7m precludes palms really and don't forget Date Palms and Washingtonia are both affected by the Palm weevil and will need regular treatment. If you don't live there full time and are unable to get regular maintenance carried out, go for indigenous succulents and things like grape vine ( I have 5 huge vines at my house on the mainland, they make beautiful shade in the Summer, produce kilos of grapes and the only care they get at the moment is a trim in the winter and a thorough watering in the Spring as I am only there twice a year until I retire there next year). I like the look of Bougainvillia but it can tend to overgrow a small space and is unpleasant to trim back with its spiteful thorns, Wisteria is a better bet for a climber but takes a while to establish and produce flowers. Lantana, Plumbago and geraniums are all indigenous and do quite well without too much care, there are also some dwarf bamboos that do well in hot dry conditions, common Ivy does well here but is invasive. I know that there are a few good garden centres around the outskirts of Palma so go and have a look around,many of the labels give you good information about habitat and growing conditions and I am sure the staff would be only too happy to give advice. I have lived on Ibiza for the last 13 years, it is a little more humid than some parts of Mallorca but if your place is to the West of the island closer to the mountains that will also be fairly humid, there are plants there that have evolved to survive on the moisture from the nightly dew. There are also a lot of ornamental grasses that will grow with a little irrigation, some of them change to fantastic reds and browns toward the end of the Summer and produce beautiful seed heads, a range of Ryes, Timothys and fescues would give a layered effect. A late thought, looking at your photo, if you have trickle irrigation you can install some of the pockets for a vertical garden on one or more walls of the yard to produce a lush, cosy atmosphere. I agree with Bespoke Interiors Redbridge UK, definitely put in full height fences, not trees. If the neighbours are problematic (sounds like they're related to mine), the fences will be a safer option than trees that shed leaves/fruit which they might take issue with. Fences also take up less room in a small garden. My garden is only 3m wide, and I have full height fences on both sides. You can paint them or whitewash them if light is an issue, though I have left mine to silver naturally (I just like the look). Get the kids involved in gardening and put raised beds in front of the fences: I am training berry plants up the fences, so they will be green and leafy once the (currently 18 inch tall) plants grow in. Sunflowers are also great to grow along fences and there are plenty of climbing or tall edible plants like sweet peas, maize and tomatoes that are easy for kids to look after (and snack on!). Be careful of getting any evergreen hedges. I have a school one side and have had to ask them to really cut back their leylandii hedge, which has been horribly neglected for years, and it's now getting close to 3.5m tall (guidelines say no more than 2m). It's expensive to cut them back if they have been neglected, so you may be setting yourself up for a big bill down the line.

You are so true, the client did have a gardener once a week as the rest of the garden is pretty large by most peoples standards!
