Are these cupboards on the offhand side? Do these go under the stairs?

Hello There,

This is a basement kitchen and family room. The left-hand side cupboards are not under the stairs, the stairs turn the opposite direction - hope that maks sense!

Wood would be lovely, but as Sarah says it is a more expensive choice. I have a cheaper option of laminate wrapped kitchen doors, and even after 13 years they look like new. It does all come down to budget.

My experience of local councils is that they don’t know their bottom from their elbow. It’s not good enough to stare you need a certificate when they are unclear about what they want the certificate to say. Ask them to direct you to the exact regulation that says a fire door is required in this situation. Firstly it sounds like you have a cupboard for your washing machine not a habitable room so you may not need a fire door because it’s not a room. Also fire doors are used to protect the stairs so people can get out of a three storey house- if your house is two storey or the utility cupboard is off a room that already has a fire door then the requirement is unnecessary. And the regulation will help you understand what they are looking for in order for your door to comply (most likely 44mm thick, rated door frame, intumescent strips, rated for 30 minutes protection etc).

It’s difficult to say IF mould will grow, but if the house is heated and there are no leaking gutters then you would probably be okay. Ventilation is essential, so make sure you open a window when cooking to let the steam out even if you have a cooker hood. People who never open windows tend to have the most problems. If you see mould behind any of the old cupboards, clean it with bleach and let it thoroughly dry out.
