Always there to greet you and your guests, but often brushed aside for its more glamourous counterparts (here's looking at you living rooms), entrances are the very face of a home yet don't get the same billing when we think about our homes and their respective rooms.
So now's the time to give it some attention - what's the most important thing an entrance should have?

Comments (34)Most of the elements have been covered already but I would say, first and foremost, storage. Get all the unattractive bottles and bits put away. The second is a large duel fuel towel rail. Summer in the UK isn't always that warm but may not be cold enough for central heating. To keep towels dry I install towel rails that are heated by the gas central heating system in winter or switched to electric for the summer months. There are good looking modern stainless steel towel rails that also act as radiators. If there is adequate space: a large bath, a large shower and a bidet or a WC/bidet combination. In addition, excellent lighting - both task and mood as well as underfloor heating. Definitely NO carpets and NO shower curtains but bath mats that can be washed and glass shower screens. By the way, Japanese baths have integral heating units but are deep and square so you have to sit with your knees up but you get constantly warm water up to your chin....See MoreWhat is the most important factor when you choose the internal doors?
Comments (4)I think that they should go with the style of the building! I hate to see mock Georgian white paneled doors in modern housing - although builders in the UK tend to use them a lot. Like all things they tend to go in fashions though, once it was solid pine, then flat wood effect etc, etc. As a designer and householder though, I tend to prefer something in keeping with the building, and hoping decor that's in tune with the exterior, so the doors would fit in with it all anyway!...See MoreMost important asset a pro can have?
Comments (7)Hello Emmeline, I think a professional should be adaptable, able to intuit and interpret the clients needs and that of their home or space worked on. Having a range of skills is obviously as important as is their particular skill set. Respect and trust goes both ways. Whether you're a whole turnkey service or not.. That doesn't matter.. All that matters is that all the parties involved in the project are working together with full information, budgets, requirements and respect for each other and the client. Now a little note on newer pro's and companies.. For companies or Pro's that are "new" emerging etc etc as nobody talks about this in a positive light from what I have read here.. Years of experience and so forth are nothing if there's no skill.. There are plenty of new companies that A don't have years of experience B masses of clients etc etc.. but as with any company or professional that has say 10-15 years experience or more.. I'd be looking less at the longevity, "experience" and more at their skill, flair and how they carry themselves.. It's no good being told someone has 20 years experience if they're terrible at what they do.. As with every pro or company everyone was new at some point. I had recently been told by someone gleefully he had 15 years experience in his trade... His work was the worst I have ever seen! For me... Comments (7)For me the most important thing was how it would "go" with the rest of the kitchen. Also, as I planned the kitchen, I needed to understand how and how well, the splash back would intersect with the extractor, the wall units and the worktop upstand. FWIW I would never have had a printed glass splash back, although we did consider a plain white one. But the style of the extractor meant the splash back needed to be shaped around the extractor unit - not so easy with pre-made glass splash back. My biggest turn off with websites is bad grammar and spelling mistakes. I feel that if a company cannot be bothered to check something as important (and often the first interaction the company has with potential customers) then I would question how careless they would be with my order. I also hate pop ups and distraction on a page. For instance - and I hope you don't mind me commenting on your website - having the phrase "package deals available!" at the top of most product pages is a distraction for someone just looking for a splash back. It looks like it's a trade only thing and it looks a bit down market and a bit Trotters Independent Traders'ish. Perhaps combo offers may be better mentioned on a separate page of "offers" or a small section in the product information that combination/bundle deals of a splash back and worktop are available....See MoreAndrew Millar
