Door between kitchen and living room

Basically rebuilding our house! We have knocked the wall down that used to separate the kitchen and dining room so now only have the 3 rooms - big kitchen and living room. Should we leave the opening or put a door in? Undecided! Please ignore the building site mess!

I love the idea of an open plan space but I suppose you want to think of it in a practical sense too - having your kitchen by your living room means cooking smells may linger around and on furniture! That said, it's a great way to spread out the light and create calm, relaxed space.

Do you have any more photos? Really exciting project!

We have the same sort of layout in our 60's dormer house.

The opening to our lounge is wider and has bi fold doors. It means we can open it out wider for social events, but close it in winter to keep the room cosy when it's cold.

The only negative to having a door there (one one from the entrance hall) is lack of one full wall to put the sofa against! You're door is smaller so it's probably not as much of an issue as ours is.

I agree with Jonathan. At that height it doesn't serve any purpose, as a serving hatch nor to socialise. The hexagonal style units and shaker style doors do date the kitchen and so the curved hatch is in line With the current style you have...if you would like to utilise it, I would consider going lower to use it to socialise with those in the living space or simply keep your eye kids (if there are any) if they too are in the living room. If you would like to modernise the space I'd consider making everything about square; have square end panels for the cupboards, plain doors, make the hatch a rectangular shape to give it All a Contemporary edge. Hi Jonathan, many thanks for the alternative plan. Below I am posting a few pictures to make it easier to visualise. The house was bought early last year and we managed to do some bits (replace and install new doors, repair and replace staircase, new flooring upstairs, painting and decorating and the new drive, and then my husband got a job abroad and we had to move). The storage cupboards in the corridor are under the stairs. We have two cats and need to incorporate their litter boxes (I was thinking of the original larder (currently accessed from the kitchen, but I am thinking of partially removing the wall between it and the loo, blocking the current door - I will attach my idea). Kitchen back door is a new security laminated glass etc door so have to keep it where it is. We are thinking of knocking down the wall between the current living room and bedroom and turning it into a tv room (we are not into watching on the big screen these days). The original prev owners photo with the old style telephone - larder kitchen access. The back door was replaced by us. Current plan (more or less accurate - with the two bedrooms downstairs) What i have in mind - broken plan kitchen living room, and bigger bathroom. Would love to have a separate shower but not sure if we can have both - i do not have the bathroom/loo measurements. Pocket or sliding door installed. Would be grateful for any suggestions. We have a Howdens Dove Grey matt finish kitchen with oak worktops and oak floors. Walls are F&B Purbeck Stone, the splashback in Titanium is also from Howdens - it’s water resistant, but NOT heat resistant board - hence the glass behind cooker. There is a north facing window over the sink and south facing French doors at the other end, also glass French doors into the kitchen so the room is usually fairly light. I wouldn’t say that the units every look white, it then the ceiling is painted in F&B Pointing and the woodwork in F&B Shadow White so maybe that affects the light and reflections? I’d really recommend plinth drawers from Howdens - I have one on the drawer unit next to the cooker and keep all my baking tins in it!

If you have no other living room, it's a good idea to keep the door as there'll be times you want to separate the rooms for noise etc. how about a pocket door? We considered this for a house we almost bought:

Thanks for the advice! Going to go for a door with glass panels I think.
