Best kitchen layout for side return extension
Comments (41)Hi Jane! You said you have little ones so want to avoid climbing opportunities for now. That makes sense but it's also worth thinking about in a year or so when you might want to start involving them in cooking, baking cakes etc, and then you could find it really helpful to be able to sit them up so they can also "work" along with you. If you're on the other side of a peninsula or island to them then you can keep sharp stuff away from them and help them with mixing, weighing, etc... Always worth looking towards the next stages when you're designing with kids because they'll grow and it can take a bit of time to finish a project - they likely will have changed in many tiny and maybe big ways before it's all complete. Hope this helps! Jane, i-architect.co.uk...See MoreFeedback on design/layout on side return extension
Comments (4)Hi OnePlan, many thanks for quick feedback. Valid points you made. The hallway to WC has a small cloakroom before you enter the WC. This is because I may not have enough space to put a door due to some structural elements and the clearing from front wall to stairs is just 36 inch. This is a southern aspect garden . I plan to put some sky lights/windows across the width of rear extension so yes its a valid point about evening sun affecting TV. Peninsula is also good option to give us more spaces. Let me work it and post back results. We could open a door to pantry/laundry room but then loose the wall to put stuff....See MoreHelp with layout of side return kitchen, diner, toilet
Comments (3)Hi Dani, What an exciting project! Looks like you have lots of options to consider. You could definitely have a downstairs washroom. Bi fold doors would be a great addition for boosting light and really bringing the outside in. You seem to know what you are looking for and it's just a case of trying out those ideas. Would you be interested in having a cuppa and a free call over the phone to bounce around some ideas? It would be great to discuss your ideas and plans over the phone and see if we can come up with some concrete ideas. Comments (1)Hi! It's really difficult to consider just the side extension alone. It's essential to consider it alongside the rest of the floorplan. It needs to work well with what you have, so you can get a complete home that works well for you. All the specific questions you have indicate that it's not yet clear to you how you'll be using the additional space. Once you are clear on this then you'll be able to answer those questions quickly and easily. Our random opinions on how your space should be doesn't really help you that much to get it right for you. It's a large footprint so there's going to be many options for you to redesign the space, but to get it right for you its necessary to have an in depth understanding of what you need to live happily in this house. How do you live your life now and what challenges does your home give you as you try to do that? How do you want to live your life and what changes do you need to make so that you can do that with ease and pleasure? When you have the answers to those questions all the rest will be clear.
