Exterior finish

Hi
I just wondered what material you used to clad the house walls - it looks like a tile. We are looking for alternatives to render to skin our timber frame.

I too would ditch the vertical blinds. Our last house had horizontal wooden cladding that had been replaced with red roof type tiles, overlapping vertically roof style. It was done before we bought the house but looked so much better than the other houses in the street. And didn't need any further upkeep. Having ditched the blinds I'd plant something spectacular in the front garden to soften the view from the road and to give a bit more privacy. Maybe a Japanese maple, which is stunning in the autumn? I think a new front door is in order. I don't think it has to be completely faithfully to the original but perhaps something with a long central window (or a three windows) will be the right feel for the house. As far as the roof pitch I don't mind it on the side extension but I feel the porch should have a flat roof. Look at the neighbours for inspiration- it might have had a semicircular flat roof to compliment the bay or there might have been a wider porch that was a continuation of the lintel over the bay window.

I like No 09 for a more traditional look, don't think it will look odd when the sides are rendered the same as the middle part. Think it will look very high end. For a more modern look, No 2 or 10. (I'd personally go for one of those, probably 2) The thing with timber cladding is that it will go grey and if there is too much of it on a home, it can look depressing. It's a personal thing; we're going to build a new home next year and I am looking at exterior finishes and quite near to us there's an all timber clad house and it looked very meh all winter long. So I've decided that we definitely do want some timber cladding, but not all of it. But others, and I hope the people whose house it is too, will love it.
