furniture / layout - Scandinavian look

Hi everyone

I would really appreciate any advice on what furniture to buy for my living room and the furniture layout please. Corner sofa or normal sofa? One big coffee table or multi small tables? My indecisiveness is what has brought me here to ask for the help of you lovely people.

ps: I will have little kids visiting frequently

What do you plan to be the focal point of the room? Do you plan on having tv and if so where is tv point? Any fire place etc ..thanks

Hi there, thanks for your comment. I wouldn't be having a TV. As for the fireplace I thought perhaps it will look odd alone on the long wall. Do you suggest perhaps I invest in one? Thanks :)

I have the same set of drawers sitting behind me, and I also got a desk in the same range which has split into two lovely bedside chests of drawers. Mine is walnut with black trim. It looks like yours is oak. The drawer fronts would have originally been wood so it might be worth stripping them. Try sanding a patch of the side and dampening it slightly to get an idea of how it will look with the horrible old varnish stripped off and waxed. I found the old varnish came off really easily with sandpaper. My chest of drawers is finished with Fiddes Hard Wax Oil on the drawers and I painted the whole of the carcass black gloss as it needed some filling. I can highly recommend the Hard Wax Oil finish if you can find a small tin. You can paint any colour but I would recommend that you stay with more masculine colours rather than pastels as these are very masculine styled pieces. So, grey blues perhaps rather than baby blue. My own choice might be Swedish Blue from Craig & Rose, with perhaps a very pale grey for the drawers if they couldn't be brought back to the wood. You can use emulsion paints as long as you overcoat that with wax or varnish so the finish will last.

Depending on how many people watch tv, I'd try the same As Carolina's 2nd suggestion but with one chair where the tv is angled towards the sofa (but not pushed right against the wall) with the tv in the other alcove. I do agree with Emily though! Seating arrangements are important for a cosy/homely feel but so are various other elements so why not post pictures so people can make suggestions? If you've got the space I'd also add a slim console behind the sofa as it will give the feeling of separation from the hall. You can pick up ones that are 25cm deep so could always move the sofa forward a fraction. If you don't want to add pics then think lighting, art, plants, colour, a range of different textures, books, diffuser or scented candle plus a rug to zone the seating area and perhaps some things that have meaning to you. Do you also have anything in the dining area other than a table? I have an obsession with cocktail trollies (and it's costing us a fortune with a g&t or 2 after work for my husband! ) but they're great for when socialising and needn't just contain alcoholic drinks if you don't drink!

Here you go, had to guess some of the dimensions of the apartment, but it's roughly correct, I think. Used the dimensions of your sofa. Used a 150 x 45 cm TV unit. Dining table 90 cm. Hope it helps. You have about 65-70 cm between the back of the sofa and the balcony door. My advise is to get creative with paper and/or tape and put the dimensions of your sofa down on the floor in the apartment. It will give you an idea of how much space it leaves to walk around. It's rather large for the size of the room, but I do like it and if you go for a light colour, it might just work. Try it out with paper or tape before you buy. You'll struggle to get that coffee table in there. I'd go for something smaller that you can easily put aside

I did a really quick mock up of your space. If it was mine, id be tempted to put in a big corner sofa (be sure to measure carefully) and pouf as seating. Something like the below but depends on the style you want.

Obviously adding lamps, rug, pictures etc. Difficult one, due to the 2 doors - ignore the colours etc i have selected, it is simply to get idea of how it could look
