Living room/dining room continued... work in progress. There is little light in the room, so ideas on how to brighten it plus give it a more eclectic feel would be welcome.

Hi Cass,

You have some great pieces of furniture, particularly the beautiful oxblood chesterfield suite!

In terms of light, I think you're missing a trick tucking that large silver mirror down the back of the room. It's a great piece, and would add two things to the scheme. Firstly, it'll add that eclectic look you want, but it'll also reflect the light from the windows around the room. Hanging behind the sofa will also make the room appear wider.

You're gorgeous trunk would look great as a coffee table, and it seems to be just the right size. The charming hexagon tables would make great lamp tables either side of the sofa with some mis-matched lamps on them.

I think the only purchase you might have to make is something to set the tv on. A great vintage sideboard or Low table on gumtree would work well as a replacement.

I'd love to see how toy get on!

Hi thank you for your ideas. The mirror is heavy and I'd rather not hang above the sofa, would leaning work? Centered or to the side nearer to the corner?

It is a shame there is little light because I don't think my plants are shown to their best advantage (have to be near the window).

I have a black and cream striped wool rug too which can replace the persian rug? I could then swop the cushions for geometric black and cream... or is that going too far...?

I tried to place furniture in your room, but do not know where is window or not. So I got what I got. I am sure the round dining table will be better. I just did not have it in my software. Try to move two sofas on different direction. may be both on the corner would be better. Round table is on other corner.

I am not sure what you are asking? You want to turn the alcove into a wine rack? In your living room? I wouldn't. Kitchen area maybe, but not in living room area.

I think you could make this room lovely Kate. Firstly, the bed you've sourced. Are you planning to sleep on it as a single or pull it out every night for a double? It's just that it seems you might have to move it 45 degrees every night from what I can see of the design. Other than that it seems like a good option for the space. You already have some ingenious ideas for creating hanging space but I would suggest some shelving (not sure if floating shelves would be strong enough?) with hanging rails underneath to give you a bit more space between the top of your 3 chest of drawers ( commodes) and the rail for longer items. There are some pics below for inspiration. I know we don't all only have black and cream clothes!! but you can see how adding a few picture frames, pretty boxes/baskets/ handbags, etc can make it look more like a glamorous dressing room. I'm assuming concealed wardrobe storage is out of your budget at the moment so making the open storage look as good as possible would be the trick here. Could the rabbit hutch be put on legs or onto an appropriately sized coffee table (ebay /gumtree find!?!) it would look more like part of the room, perhaps with a couple of pics leaning against the wall, food concealed in a pretty box/basket etc.) Does your other menagerie (all the cuddly toys) have to stay? If your looking for the style in your inspiration pics (which are lovely BTW) they might need boxing up and going tthrough the square hole into the loft/attic space!! They'll have a ball up there without you. Maybe a couple on the top of your rabbit hutch for old times sake :-) Good luck.

Hi there, you can achieve a more eclectic look but it is going to be time and investment here I am afraid as you essentially got three different styles going on already. The room at the moment is de fragmented. Gather up all your plants and put them in the corner next to the sofa first of all, we can add inexpensive lighting around your pots which will look fab at night. You have several stands that you maybe able to use some look too tall though.

Absolutely agree with the last comment that trunk is a great coffee table.

The mirror needs to be somewhere else how about your bedroom?

On the wall behind the sofa you need a montage of pictures, mirrors throw in a shelf for good measure around the room and add interest too. The great thing is you can keep adding once you have established your enter pieces.

You can go two ways either a working on the sofa and rug tones adding some old white and black would look fab or real splashes of colour would also look amazing

The dining table is not right at all but I have some ideas for this

As I have done here we added lighting to the bottom of the plants and just seen added a clip on light to that large canvas. Lots of cushions and throws will look great in here.

Find a vintage mahogany drinks cabinet paint it black and put all your TV bits and pieces in there

Hi, think Suzi has some great ideas - lots of opportunities to add special pieces. I love mixing up styles, texture and colours.......pops here and there work really well! Thanks for the comments so far. My problem is that I love many different styles. I will try and post some pictures of the styles I like.

Suzi I hear you, but will a black piece of furniture not darken things even more in the room?

I recently purchased the table out of pure love for the design. However I was considering re-upholstering the chairs.

The plants are in pots (difficult to see but they are not stands).

As for the mirror I already have another in my bedroom, a tad smaller, antique gold finish...

Suzi what would working on this entail? I am definitely interested.
