layout ideas long room with fireplace and door in the middle

I would really appreciate some help with my lounge.

It is a long longe with a patio door at one end and room width wide windows at the other end. In the middle of the room is the fire place and opposite is the door into the room. The walls on the door side have two huge radiators.

I would love a cosy sociable room but feel that the door/fireplace split the room in two. We are about to decorate and get all new furniture so am currently hunting for some layout ideas. We are looking at a curved sofa and snuggle chair, maybe coffee table too. Need some layout inspiration!

Hello, I personally feel it is the door that is the issue and not the fireplace, If your layout outside of this room allows you to move the door along the wall to the other end I would consider as an option by getting some no obligation quotes from reputable builders for costs, it would give you more choice of room layouts, if its a stud wall it should be a relatively easy job for a qualified builder and probably the cost wouldn't be too much.

Without being in the room it really is difficult to assess the situation, if you could upload some more photos taken from each corner of the room to the opposite corner diagonally and from front to back it may give others more of an insight into assisting you.

Due to the length you can't really create one large seating area that feels joined correctly as the space between people would feel incorrect (uncomfortable). I would either create a seating area at one end centred around the TV area and one the other say more centred on a cosy fire place and maybe games. Or create one fairly large area for seating - that uses the 'square' area of space - and then at one end behind this area create a study area and bookcase. This will create your square area and feel comfortable. If you have difficulties with this and would like help we would do this as part of a single room redesign for the space where lighting, layout, styling and flooring are all thought about together to create a unified and beautiful space that suits your needs. I agree with Alix ie I would use the one end for something else so it seems like two rooms just opened up into each other rather than one long room Perhaps a reading book by the south window? Ie day bed/lounge to chill out on with a rug under it to define that area. Then have your L shaped sofa facing towards the tv/fire in the North side. Shame you have the door right in the middle but it can still work as long as you don’t block it up too much. What other rooms are around it? Whole plan would help

Hello! Wow! Thank you very much for your advice. So, there is a radiator on the right hand wall. That is where current owners put their tv. Not sure it will fit, will measure up soon hopefully. The TV could go on a smaller unit to be honest, and will make sure radiator is turned down! Just worried that there isn't enough room for a corner sofa there with the door to the hallway..(see photos on rightmove) I LOVE the idea of large mirrors either side of fireplace. Pinching that! ;) My current living room is decorated in shades of greys and lots of gold. Thinking of going navy and gold but not too sure. Sofa colours argh! Huge thanks I'm very grateful. Katie

Hi, I would definitely swap the play and living area over. If you have a snug chair under the window (the big velvet ones look lovely, maybe a pop of colour like blue, green or even pink?) then if you are removing the fire place you could do built ins on that back wall to frame the tv or have floating cupboards under a tv that’s mounted on the wall. A corner sofa could then be run right from the door and down towards the tv wall framing this new cosy space. The play area then sits but the patio doors which is nice with extra light. Low storage could sit next to your corner sofa giving you a place to pop your tea. And a playful rug would zone out the play from the living nicely. I would say the wallpaper, artex and sconces date this room, I have had a little look for some inspiration and I hope it helps 😊 good luck with whatever you decide to go with

I have a very similar room. We removed the fireplace as it had a flue-less gas fire with no chimney breast. We have temporarily divided the room with some bookcases as an IKEA Kallax 4x4 unit. We made the front end an office space and the back is now a more sensible size and more cosy too. There’s still easily room at the back to seat 6 people. In the long term I’d like to put up a proper dividing wall and then merge the back seating space with my dining area that is currently a separate room. It’s not very stylish at the moment but it’s been useful to get an idea of how the space might work if we reconfigured it.
