What paint shall we use on a vertical steel support column?

Steel post will be part of our kitchen island surface which may be light oak or white Quartz!

I presume it is a contemporary design? If so I saw a great barn conversion recently in which the new steel columns were a dark grey. They looked fabulous and worked well with the mix of new and old. I'd suggest choosing a neutral, contrasting colour as it won't date or clash with future colours you may introduce into the room. Hope that helps PB

Thanks for your help with the colours. Would you use a hammerite type paint or is there anything else more suitable?

Hi Felicity Thought I would check in and give my six-penny worth! Consider Muriva™ Sparkle Glamour Real Glitter Bug Wallpaper in Teal as back feature. Muriva are British based and have a large range of different designs. We met their Sales manager a year ago and some Wow schemes including industrial. The Teal glitter would make a statement (see image) on the back wall behind your new bed, coupled with the contrasting comforter set (image also). To complement the colouration suggest a duck egg blue paint over the rest of the room. Hope this stimulates the creative flow? Best wishes Celia xx

The plasterer went ahead when we were out!! If you see the picture to the far right he has plastered to that point. The remaining area is still covered in pink fire rated plasterboard. I was wondering if he double boarded underneath, which is to the same depth as the bolts, and then double board just above the plate but about only one inch wide. This is the width of the plate either side of the column. I think I could cope with that part painted white, and the column black. I hope that didn't sound garbled!! What do you think?

My company specialises in renewing and upgrading existing stairs as well as designing and making new ones. Here's a project that we completed at the end of 2016, the first pictures are how the stairs looked when we first visited and the last ones with the glass are how we changed it. Here's the review from our client who was very pleased http://bit.ly/2oYjRFi . All our work is designed and made in house so you don't have to bother with taking templates to a local glazier. As you have seen from the number of replies the range of options are unlimited. Most things can be achieved with the right client and good budget but to avoid spending too much on something you don't need it is important to gain an understanding of how you want the whole house to look; I always request that my clients show me images of things they like, furniture, interiors so that a design can be developed that not only complements the design/ concept of a home but enhances. Depending on your budget, you could make a saving by just renewing the stairs in a design that incorporates a glazed banister and fixes the issues that you are concerned about. Site installation work is far more expensive than just making something from scratch in our workshop. I don't believe you have any problems offering B&B with the stairs as they are as far as Building Regs go. What you should probably take account of though is providing a staircase for the guests that they are comfortable with and feel safe using, if you are certain that all the guests will be fully mobile adults then in the strict reading of the regs your stairs will comply anyway. Building Regs approved document K requires gaps in staircase risers and banisters to be 100 mm or less to provide adequate safety for children. Following this, but also keeping open risers means adding a small downstand underneath the tread to reduce the open riser height. It will also pose problems adding glass to the side of your existing flight because you will have difficulty because there are not convenient points to fix the glass, nor have the carriages - the beams supporting the treads underneath - been designed to carry the additional load from the glass or stair users pressing on it, so additional structure must be added to the carriage to carry the glass, everything is possible but most people have a budget so I must ask you - What is yours? Thank you all for your comments. kl55hp your project sounds equally exciting. One thing that I learned so far is the need for light, big windows, big doors!! We have exactly the same dilemma regarding living in the house during the building work; it will save a lot of money as well. You have definitely thought this further than us. Sounds like there is a consensus regarding using a professional to help us make some decisions! OnePlan, thank you for the pictures the colours are spot on. Were thinking of a slightly more modern look by incorporating some gloss cabinets to reflect light etc. Thank you all once more!

Hammerite highly rekomended for metal works, i'm not sure if you can mixed colour though. But still there is few nice colours to choose from.
