Advise on kitchen splashback / tiles please
Hi there - I have just moved into a new house and need to put in splashback in the kitchen- there was not anything on the walls and I cook quite a lot and they are getting very dirty.
It's a victorian masionette which has had the side return and a small extension done, creating a great space. The design is quite modern and very white - which is great but I think it needs some colour or something to make it feel more warm. You can see from the photo the cabinuts are white (Ikea), the walls are white, the floor tiles are white etc.
I would apprecaite advise on what to do on the splashback (or anything else for that matter). My preference right now is to do tile as opposed to a glass splashback. You can see from the right hand side of the photo some of the tiles we are considering.
Thoughts on colour, tiling pattern, tile size, how high to tile etc etc would great.

Comments (19)Thank you for all your responses. My preference is matching splash back to the bench-tops. The trouble is the size of these laminate splash back comes in are 3000mm x 600mm or 1500mm x 1210 mm - I will require at-least 3100mm by approx 695 mm (h) as all units are set a little bit higher due to the minimum requirements for gas hob clearance. I opted all units to be set higher as I wanted streamlined look hence I am looking at a minimum of 2 joins. Would 2 joins on a laminate splash back look okay? Or would it be too obvious. Comments (16)Glass would look good - give you a little reflectance without mirroring everything on the worktop. Also could be a subtle way to introduce some colour. If you use clear glass with screw back type fixings, then you can change the colour now and then by painting the wall behind if you're nervous about colour, or think you would want to change the look now and then. 8 years agoPersonally I would not go with a splash back - just tiles. I would go for a grey tile to go with your worktop. I too have just moved house and have acquired a mauve splash back - see picture attached. I am considering getting rid of it and having something that goes more with the rest of the kitchen, i.e. black/grey/white.

8 years agoLovely room and I also think a burst of green would look good. Lime green on the whole back wall in a washable paint would pick up on the artwork on your sofa wall. I've used lime in a small way, picking up on the mural and used a sheet of clear Perspex to protect the area behind the taps/sink.

8 years agoThanks for the comments so far everyone. Here is a closer up picture of the tiles we have so far. I like the smaller royal blue one (third from left, from Fired Earth) and the green crackle one (5th from left, also from Fired Earth), but think due to the size of the space and practicality of cleaning we should go for a larger tile, 20x10 or 30x10? I like the size of the duck egg one (second from right, from Topps Tiles), but think it's a bit too dark after having it home, I was much I more keen on it in the shop.
I'm leaning towards tiles to add some texture and Seth to the room, as opposed to pairing or glass.
I have also just ordered a larger number of samples from wallsansfloors.com which seem to have some nicer larger tiles.
Is there any other tiles store we should be looking at? Live in SE4.

8 years agolovely kitchen...sleek lines. personally I'd keep the linear feel and prefer a more solid splashback. a green hue but not too overpowering in glass would work well under the skylight. I've attached pic of something that would work....

8 years agoI would tend to recommend tiles over glass spashbacks to avoid the trouble/expense of getting them templated for all your socket cutouts etc, although a small glass upstand (low splashback) would still look very good with your kitchen. As to colour, you have a very neutral kitchen so have a very wide choice open to you. Netral greys would work well, but so would introducing a splash of colour. It looks as though you have some purples elsewhere in your room (lighting, vase), so it might be worth trying to match (or at least coordinate) with that. Why not consider some modern, textured tiles like these plum Fractal Facet or Fractal Ridge tiles from Conran - we are in the process of fitting these for a client who wanted some "wow" in their kitchen, and they really love them!
I would also echo the comments of others to go for a good, wipe-clean kitchen paint for any remaining exposed areas in the kitchen, though in an open plan area such as yours, mixing paint types requires a little care and thought to avoid strange "seams".

8 years agoWe've just today had our tiling started. We had same dilemma with similar colour kitchen. We decided to play safe and went for white tiles with some texture and we'll paint one full wall in eating area and one wall above the tile line in bright green. We figured if we changed our mind at any point, we just need to repaint.

8 years agoPity you have decided against glass in favour of tiles. We have just done our kitchen and I wanted an easy-to-clean surface for the splash back, so the rough surface of grouting around tiles, and also the indentations on some patterned tiles (which collect grease and grime) ruled them out for me! I went for glass, which the manufacturers matched exactly to the duck egg paint colour on the other walls (just gave them a product code of the paint), and although the initial outlay for the glass was expensive, the surface is so brilliant to keep clean and it looks fab as well. I would definitely recommend, and you could match it to, say, your lovely pink/purple ceiling lights ...

8 years agoHi Adam. A nice idea would be to experiment with tiles that give an interesting visual effect. I would suggest our Tex range (image below). Although it's not quite finished. This is the effect of the tiles I showed you previously. We should have maybe put a row or two less tiles under the extractor hoods and had a bit more green but otherwise we're happy with the effect. Floor and plinths still need to go in.

I also think that the kitchen needs some colour which will make it more warm. As for my opinion pink/red/purple suits to grey color, so I hope these type of tiles would look good.
