I just downsized to a small condo and have been thinning out my collection of books drastically. I am going to have most of one wall in my living room lined with Whittier "classic" bookshelves painted to match the walls. These shelves are purchased unfinished and I am painting them myself. By getting all the same height and a mix of single or double wide shelving units, I can make these look like built ins when they're all lined up together. One thing I learned from my 4 years living in Southern California is to always make sure my shelves are firmly attached to the wall. I use Quakehold steel safety fasteners. I have cupboards under and next to the basin so there is lots of out of sight space for spares. I do keep what I need daily on the surface next to the basin but they are in glasses in a colour that goes with the room and I've arranged them slightly artily so they look considered, not haphazard. That's my view - people who visit my house might think differently! Thinking about it, many of my friends keep everything hidden. When I had my loft converted in my previous home, the architect gave me a very pretty bag to take all my daily stuff in and out of the bathroom - the message was, keep them out of sight. Only remembered that right now. I think I'll have to rethink my routines!

Just a quick update - this is our solution to the Lego storage problem. It’s not perfect but it’s a million times neater. This is / was the kids play room, but as they’re now older teens, it’s more of a second sitting room. We used to have a bookcase, tv unit and a gas wood burner on this wall - we took out the burner, bricked up the hole from the flue and have had a new storage unit made to fit the gap. It can hopefully house our book collection, lego and clutter all in one. (Fingers crossed!!)
