How to fix bottom part of outdoor curtains?

Hey Folks, literally I have dilema. In our outdoor pergola we used outdoor curtains to protect the furniture and staff inside against sun and water,like you can see on the picture (illustration photo) but its really windy here and i need to keep the curtains closed... And thats huge problem. First i thought, that i can sew some strings to the corners, and than it will be fixed, but the surface of curtains is too big aand the wind maybe to strong, so it teared after first day... Do you have any idea how to fix it better? Thank you for any solution. Joey

Wind will always be a problem for outside areas. Sewing, bolting or tying down will only result in damage. The wind needs to be able to blow through then it will lose it's strength. Having small eyelets put into the curtains at regular intervals will help.

This won't be a small amount of work, but if you can sew a pocket into the bottom of each panel you can insert a row or line of ball bearings to give them more weight.

Thanks guys - we did a lot of experimenting and testing on some old floorboards before deciding on this stuff. The Osmo oil gives a deep and rich finish on old pitch pine that looks very different to varnish - deeper and with more of the grain being brought out. It's more like a beeswax finish from olden times, without the backbreaking labour and maintenance. Interestingly on the new boards (in the top bedroom), it makes far less difference: the new pine just looks yellow and shiny, much as it would if varnished. But the oil should be tougher and lower maintenance. We decided to restore these floors rather than replace as they were actually in remarkably good condition: this house has never had fitted carpets fitted, nor central heating fitted until 2014, and when it was installed it was installed with regard to keeping the floors intact (many systems installed in past decades saw the boards sawn up and hacked about). I wanted look that is obviously original, and can't be mistaken for engineered wood. I did think about a limewashed finish, but bottled it at the last minute and went totally traditional, as I thought less risk of a finish done to a trend that would be hard to reverse.

Hi. We have a dark corner in our hallway where the coats are kept just by the cellar door. We have a lamp on a table and use the Philips Hue motion sensor so the lamp comes on f we walk close by it and we have set it to stay on r 1 minute. (brightness controlled via app and can be different day and night)- you could consider this for your lamp whilst you decide on the stairs. Yes, i agree that recessed roman blinds would show off that fabulous panelling. But I’m wondering about your windows: judging by the hinges and handles it looks like the whole of each of the three windows open inwards, and are side hung? If so, you may need to fix any blinds directly to the opening sashes, so that they can still be opened...

Hi, steal some of the kitchen (hall side) as a nice new (more spacious) bathroom. Don’t think it matters that it’s on the ground floor as it’s right at the bottom of the stairs. Use your old bathroom as 2nd wc or utility room and cupboard space (so convenient off the hall). Then you can enjoy clutter-free life in your new extension! Only down-side is that you’d have to pass through your living room space to get to your new kitchen/dining area. But good design of your new space should mean this isn’t a problem. Knowledge and historical experience of how our deigns actually function in their environment is so important to client satisfaction. I once had a similar dilemma with an open porch which was oriented at the end of a long field, the wind was so strong it would move their wrought iron furniture. I was concerned the new porch I was designing would blow over like an umbrella, I calculated for the wind load effect. In retrospect understanding your problem now, I was wondering if you could add the similar detail to the bottom of the drapes as to the top with a rod and eyelets, could that be an option? Or are drapes to light of a material for the conditions?
