Thank you so much for your very kind comments and advice! Forzaitalia. I looked up the Fatsia Japonica and really, really like it, great it is evergreen as well. I love acers but the trouble is I worry it may look sparse in winter. I wish there was an evergreen acer! I do love geraniums and have lots at the front, just not sure they work here. As you say perhaps because they are dotted around and not in groups. Jen P thank you v much for the pics, I like the table and chairs image you have put up. I have a table and chairs and have put it on the rockery and taken a pic but am not sure it works. Maybe it is due to the white colour? Of course not sure what do in the winter with it either. I love the waterfall pics but think it could mean excavation and worried about the cost at this stage. Def something maybe for a few years time. Rachelmidlands thank you also for taking trouble to look up pics, I love the red colour of the plants contrasting with the green. I also love the pagoda. This is really inspiring. I wonder if I can try something like this. As for the water feature, I wonder what I can do with the wire as it would have to go round the width of the rockery and round to the electrical point. I also looked up ponds in containers and there are some lovely designs but again I am not sure what container would work, a wood planter, a fibreglass one... Maybe I could try two either side of the rockery? It would be great to put in a fountain to really add some interest but of course if the solar ones don't work in winter that is an issue. Anyway a couple more pics including an aerial one for perspective and thanks again

Hi Jenny, I would start by making a wish list of what you really need. This will determine your list of appliances that will need housing, how much worktop will be needed, how many sinks, how large your hob will be, how much storage to store food and kitchenware etc. As it is an open plan space you will need to consider the sizes of sofas/armchairs that you have or are buying and size of dining table. Another important thing to consider is the sofas orientation. Are you having TV in the room? Where are the sockets for this etc. All of this really matter when you are looking at the layout of an open plan space. Take advantage of high ceilings in period property and make sure you have easy access to all every day items otherwise you will clutter your worktops. Look at options of designs where living room cabinetry is integrated with kitchen. Start with your detailed brief and the layout will evolve naturally. Suzanne

Hi, This is a really fantastic floorplan for ideas as its almost a blank canvas. Here is a quick design that I came up with. I thought you might want a proper entrance hall so that you don’t enter the whole space immediately. As you come through the kitchen is now on the left with living room open to it but partly screened with a central fireplace (the chimney might have to be cleverly routed through the ceiling or the fire could be electric). Then at the back of the house you have a large dining area and and enclosed lounge. I think some folding doors or more glazing at the back with a raised patio or decking would also make this dining room more of a feature! Please let me know what you think?
