Garden storage shed

Plan to erect a decent sized storage shed for the back patio. The patio measures 19 foot wide and 13 foot deep. We are unsure what will look best. A shed 12x10 with small area left for seating or go for a 16x8 shed. Any suggestions which will make this area look softer but still functional. The rest of the garden needs to be landscaped but we are starting with the back area first.

We took a bog standard ugly shed that was hidden behind bamboo and painted it and ripped out the bamboo and other overgrown plants. It is much friendlier now and I can't wait until spring when we can see all the bulbs pop up. As suggested, save a lot of photos to your idea book and you'll come up with something that works for you.

In regards to whether to go for a larger shed for more storage or a smaller shed to give space for a seating area will all depend on how much use you make of your Garden.
Will everything you store be practical, such as a lawnmower, hedge trimmer, etc. or leisure gear like bikes?

Hi Minnie I need IN-ground, not ON .. ideally don't want to lose any space you see. If one could sink one of those into the ground it would be okay but i suspect that they would not cope with the pressure of the earth around them or people walking on the lid. I also doubt that they could sit flush with the surrounding ground without water ingress through the lid.

The box is locked with a mortice key (5 lever) and a lock that is welded into place. Not sure you can see the key hole on this image - but it is there. It’s also welded to the ground and is made of structural steel - using intimidation tactics to dissuade the opportunist. The added security is that it’s actually disguised as a planter and so most people are surprised to find it provides nearly 4sqm of extra storage. If you are in London, come for a tour!

I have to say, a friend has a very similar set up because they are short of space - and theirs works really well. They still have gates / wide doors at either end, but it has allowed them to put shelves and hooks etc on the walls to help with storage. It isn’t ideal - but if it’s the only storage option that you have, it can work well. The only thing they have found is that it can become a bit of a dumping ground for things, so they are mindful about keeping it tidy.

Thanks for offering to share your ideas. I have now set up a new ideabook for Garden. The shed will store garden equipment, BBQ, garden furniture, tools and 3 cycles. We are also thinking of converting the loft so it would be useful to have some space in the shed for some overspill of small household stuff that can no longer be stored in the loft. We like simple, clean lines without being clinical, like the shabby chic or swedish design styles. I do like the painted sheds in pale green and cream. It might soften a very uninspiring back patio.

When we get to the garden, I'd like something which is relatively easy to maintain, decent patch of grass with some tall plants/climbers up the side of the fence. Plants with loads of colour, like the country garden type flowers and shrubs. This is just to help build a picture for what will surround the shed.

Any suggestions, will be appreciated.

Hi. I'd go for the smaller shed, something decorative with windows and door that are front opening. I'd try and get one that is up to 10ft wide and 13' deep which is fairly tall (or look at made to measure) so you can run a pergola off it for a seating area to the right. I'd install fencing on the left and consider painting it all a mid to dark grey which is a great foil for greenery. Perhaps a lawn design similar to this (pic will follow) which should make the garden feel bigger and provide a path to the shed door. Where they have the shrub planted amongst the lawn I'd go for a larger evergreen shrub or tree which should disguise the view of next doors garden building. You can also have climbers on the pergola which will provide some privacy at the back. If you get the sun in that area though I would consider extending the patio and pergola in an L shape so you have decking running off the patio for seating and use the area on the existing patio for a BBQ/fire pit area etc (hope that makes sense!) I might also invest in the all weather rattan garden furniture so you don't need to take up more space in the shed.

Minnie, I love the shed and pergola idea. We are going to go for this solution. Thank you, we wouldn't have thought of this. The photo was really useful. The curved lawn idea is also very nice too.

How about re-imagining the humble garden shed and using it for both storage and a retreat. A clever storage solution can have all your stuff locked away whilst you relax.
