POLL: How often do you have ready meals?

TV dinners made life for working people in the 1960s and 1970s both easier and less healthy. However, the food industry has improved the quality of frozen dinners over the past years and everybody now and again resorts to the lazy option of industrially produced meals once in a while after a hard day's work.

So here's some food for thought – how often do you eat ready meals at home?

Very useful when our kitchen was being done. My elderly mum has them daily or she would not have a hot meal. I love to cook as a way to relax so not that often. But might have one tonight as I am on my own.

It's not food, it's disgusting mush full of salt, sugar, fat and other unmentionables. I'm on my own quite a lot when hubby is away but I don't find it a chore to prepare a few vegetables for myself. Either that or there's usually some home made leftovers in the freezer such as curry or chilli.
Sorry, but I'm afraid I see little excuse for eating ready meals apart from laziness!

Angelboyman nails it for me. We have been in this house 32 years and have done everything at least once from renewing the roof and windows to digging out the floor, putting in a damp course and installing central heating. The ensuing recoration has been a "classic" traditional colour-scheme of soft barley and sage green to suit the era the house was built. It suits us down to the ground and we are not distracted by outdated decor. We give it a lick of paint when it needs it. The house is the only one in this Victorian terrace to have retained many original features such as picture rails, dado, marble fireplace and ceiling rose, but internal doors were sadly a victim of the dreaded Fire Certificate and other "improvements", which also mean all the features inc. windows and front door were not retained as we would have wished and we have also had to cover the pine floors we so lovingly restored with carpets and vinyl because they needed protecting from high-heels and countless sandy feet. We also dopted the German fashion for wood-chipping and painting what were pretty uneven walls. They have been over-painted so often, the texture is barely visible and it has withstood the test of time. We are in a seaside location, so there has been heavy wear and tear from a couple of generations of holiday making friends and relatives as well as our own family. The kitchen is the biggest challenge being north-facing with practically no light and whilst it was being excavated we made the bathroom into a temporary kitchen, but never restored it, so now we have two showers and three toilets in the house, but no bath! The room is a designated "laundry room" which is also a tool store, boiler and hobby room. The house will soon be on the market, so redecoration will not be our choice. The new caretakers of this happy home will have a blank canvas. Good luck to them! I just hope they retain the features and the character.

I install home automation equipment and lighting controls. I don't have a TV in the house : ) I do though, have a projector with a retractable screen. This has totally changed the way we watch TV. We only watch what we want to - which is mainly programs recorded via Youview or films. When the projector isn't on, the screen is out of sight in the ceiling and the room is setup for more social activities. Personally, I couldn't be without the radio. We have speakers in every room for this and music in general. Upstairs this is done with inceiling speakers so again, it is a discrete system.

My wife loves cooking and is a fabulous cook so I'm lucky, she can cook any meals. Previous experiences mean we never order in and because we live out in the sticks I'd doubt anyone would deliver this far out.

Unfortunately, MRSA is all over, not just lurking in hospitals anymore. My nephew contracted it when he was about 18 months old. The doctors had strict guidelines to follow for prevention of further outbreaks for both him, and the entire family. My sister was told that everyone, not just families that are dealing with MRSA, should wash towels after every use with bleach as a means to kill any of the germs. bTW, my sister has always kept a spotless home, so it wasn't like this is a home with full of excessive germs.

No ready dinners in my home. We're too picky eaters =) Anyway, sometimes there may be pizza or sushi delivery, depending on who is more hungry when I'm not home yet: my husband or my daughter =)

Ready-made dinners have come a long way since the synthetically-filled, dubious-tasting, health-hazard products of the 80s and 90s (although I've at least survived into middle-age unscathed by the odd Findus Crisy Pancake!)

Now there are some quite fabulous and delicious locally produced ready meals available for us lazy sub-human creatures who occasionally are too knackered at the end of a busy week to cook.

We quite often use Jamie Oliver's pre organised veggies and his lemon me range pie is to die for!
