Pole dilemma

We have had an extension built and have had to have a supporting pillar/pole

. I assumed we would have it white but now my other half has thrown a spanner in the works and isn't sure if white looks right. He thinks anthracite grey like the bifold doors may look better. What do you think?

I agree with your husband I think it would look better painted anthracite grey. It would make more of a feature of it. Think of an industrial look and bring some elements of that style into the room. Must sat it will be fabulous when you have parties for dancing round too!

Hello Ali, I would avoid the Roman blinds as they would block out too much light. I am not convinced about the pole either as the photo suggests that you have little or no deadlight (the space between the top of the window and the ceiling. I would opt for a fabric covered board with a small fascia at the front and a full width track so that it suggests you have proper curtains even if they are only dress. Also make sure the curtains are full, otherwise they risk looking like strings of spaghetti! Good luck.

I have used eyelet curtains with oak poles and there was no problem at all. Maybe when you pull them there is slightly more friction than with metal, but I took metal poles down and replaced with oak to make the room warmer.

Sukiharrison and Odd job Hadyman, Thank you very much for your comments :) We actually intended to have the sofa on the opposite wall and built in cabinets and shelves exactly like you've suggested but I absolutely loved this big L shape sofa so desided to have it as it is now. There is no problem to move one part of the sofa to the opposite wall and the other to the wall against the window, but for now this is more convenient lay out. The shelves have to wait for now but I imagine them in white. After hearing a few suggestions about the secondary light by the window I will probably listen to the pros and remove it In favour of a floor or table lamp. No curtains.. For now :) I have a big thing about dust and would like this house to be as easy to clean as possible and generally don't like curtails Over radiators. Thou I understand this will affect the appearance I'd like to keep it simple.

I have a similar design concept going Into my new extension. it's a 3.5mtr door with side window meeting at the corner post. as were going for aluminium also, we spoke to the manufacturers and there also doing the side window in aluminium also which will be the exact height and size of the door. this means there is no difference in proportions or frame sizes and the cill will match in with the whole design. I would suggest speaking with the door manufacturer and see what option they can give. wish I could give you a more technical answer but I leave the details up to my other half as that's his trade.

Tell us more about what you're planning to use the room for and where furniture will be placed in relation to the supporting pole... these variables could mean that relating the pole to something other than just the windows is the better design choice... :)

I would also vote anthracite. I think this will make it look more intentional rather than 'maybe if we paint it white no-one will see it' which doesn't really work.
