any ideas on where to place an occasional chair and what colour.

Hi,

the only place left (according to this picture) is the one in front of the camera, between the car toy and the sofa. As the living palette is all greys the chair can be any colour you want. Be bold with it and the chair will be a touch of contrast in the space.

I agree the only space would be in front of the camera. I would go with another shade of grey, perhaps a lighter grey. I would then introduce a strong, bright accent colour such as orange, purple or mustard yellow. I'd add some accessories such as a rug, cushions etc. I love your feature wall!

I'd go for an L shaped sofa. This then would divide the room between the archway and the L I would create a study area - a modern desk (not a computer desk from an office supplies store) with a fancy lamp and chair. Tie in the style to the sofa - contemporary, modernist etc. I too like the idea of a console table behind the sofa on the side of sofa and arch and maybe a Ron Arad book worm book shelf on the wall facing the sofa to pick up the curve of the arch. Come to think of it, if your budget is generous a slightly curved sofa would look great too. Hi, do you really miss having a comfy place to sit there? If so, have you considered a dining type of bench? Those aren't much deeper than your cabinets. For example: http://www.angelandboho.com/boho-banquettes--chairs-291-c.asp I would not put a sideboard there. But a chair and a little table could work. If you don't really need the extra seating, consider just hanging some interesting artwork. Or something like the mural that craftycountess used.

I would either have the same muted patchwork chairs or if you particularly want a contrast I would pick a similar style chair that is one of the solid colours that make up the patchwork. I wouldn’t go with the bright chair.

Carolina, thank you, you give so much time to thas - it has given us loads to think about. We really would need to get used to the room being divided by the sofa though. We have had it that way but it made the room very small and squashed,feeling we were all sitting so close to the fire and the rest of the room unused. I have also had two 3 seater sofas coming out from the fireplace, facing each other, with a table between. I liked that as it opened the room up and it felt 'social', my partner liked it less because of difficulty viewing the tv. At the minute Ring the sofas form more of an L shape, on the wall to the left and the wall facing the windows. With the TV between the windows we can all watch TV and see the fire, without sitting behind each other. The open space is great. The downside of this layout is that if as a family we are sitting on both sofas some people can't see each other so conversation is difficult. Another thought for me was 2 of the Harrington chaise sofas - as one would fit in front of the window and stretch into the alcove beside the fire, the other would sit facing the TV and wouldn't stick out beyond the wall where the door is. This would be great for seeing each other and talking. There would still be space for 2 chairs or a sofa on the left hand wall. Unfortunately for good family time, the compromise might have to be 'looks'.

That's not an occasional chair!!! That's a high chair!!!!!! Groan groan....sorry!!!!!!! Think a funky mustard yellow or shocking pink would look fab in this room!

I agree, put it next to that toy, make it bold and full of contrast and character to everything else, and push that sofa back to the wall!?
