Kitchen/open plan room floor dilemma

We are planning an extension which will include open plan kitchen on one side and family and dining area on the other side after an island. We are thinking of a gloss door for most of the kitchen, but then a dark wood for island facing on to rest of room (as in the photo) so it looks more like 'furniture'. However was hoping to have an wooden floor throughout, but worried only a tiles will work. Other problem is that unlikely to have underfloor heating in part of the room which is the existing house. Any suggestions very welcome, or let me know if it won't work. Thanks.
