POLL: What type of decorations do you prefer on your Christmas tree?
Comments (12)I'm with eimearcahill, there is absolutely NOTHING tasteful about my Christmas decorations, it's excess everywhere. I did suggest when my daughters both got to their twenties that I might scale things back a bit but, after a reaction that could have earned them a walk on part in The Grinch who Stole Christmas, I realised that it was obviously very important that I spent the best part of a day turning the house into Santa's grotto :D I now have a granddaughter so I am resigned to many more years to come.......See MoreLive Chat: How to bring personality into your home, December 3rd 12pm
Comments (66)They'll never go out of style Tom - NEVER!! Haha! A10) Ohhh I love eclectic style, Maxine, and yes, I mix styles all the time in my own home! I will say, for as easy as it sounds to just throw everything you love into a space, it’s actually one of the hardest looks to do really well – that’s not to discourage you of course because when it all comes together, it’s incredibly satisfying! While it may be tempting to just include everything you like from all different styles together in one space, the resulting feeling will be one of over-stimulation and confusion. So the secret of this seamless integration requires creativity and some self-imposed boundaries. Sticking with a structured colour palette will give the room cohesiveness without making the room flat and uninteresting. Start with a neutral base for your larger pieces, your paint colours and/or your flooring as a means of grounding the space. Pay attention to how pieces relate to one another and how they relate to the room as a whole. One oversized piece is absolutely fine but 3 or 4 will make the room look cluttered and uncomfortable. Despite using mid-century hoop chairs alongside a more traditional chesterfield in my own living room, the backs of the chairs are of similar height to the low-lying sofa back. There is continuity of the eyeline and nothing jars too dramatically. You also want to ensure that when borrowing from different eras, you mix and match throughout the space – having a mid-century console table with art of the same era hanging above it and then a Victorian style fireplace with an ornate mirror in a different part of the room is going to look ‘off’. Take that artwork and hang it above the fireplace instead and perhaps use the more ornate mirror above the console table instead! Hope that helps!...See MoreHow do you keep burglars away from your home during the holidays?
Comments (7)Well one tip I wouldn't recommend is thinking that having a car on the drive is going to discourage burglars - they'll probably break in to nick the keys for the car. I was woken by burglars who had come in my house a few months ago in the middle of the night and they were in my Mercedes on the driveway with the engine running - they just couldn't work out how to release the parking break! I RAN outside (stupid idea) and confronted them and they abandoned the car and ran. The experience was the first time ever I have not felt comfortable in my own house, and the next day I put it on the market and moved area. I did lots of reading on the topic afterwards and it seems like lights on and TV on are still the best deterrents - burglars don't want to meet with the owner during the burglary....See MoreDifferent sized alcoves next to chimney breast
Comments (17)I'd build the whole thing back out as one unit with even shelf sizes both sides. 8cm is not wide enough to put anything on anyway. So if you re-build you can dictate the sizes. All the pics above are nice, but they are all of proper sized shelves. In fact, you could always buy 'off the shelf' units and move them along the wall at will. As your gap is only 8cm you could fill the gap behind the units on both the left and right allowing you to put the unit wherever you like....See MorePipe dreams plumbing company
