Obviously the colour will look slightly different when it is painted over the White undercoat

Hi Lou Ella,

It does indeed look blue; how many coats have you applied?

The wall looks freshly plastered so i'd definitely suggest an undercoat otherwise the paint will be patchy in various places due to it being absorbed by the dry wall.

I'd definitely never recommended anything with blue or green undertones for a hallway, however greyed out plumbs/reds etc work perfectly: they're not too bold and they're not too cold and clinical. I'd suggest a textured wallpaper to add depth, such as Black Edition. It's a simply hessian style wall paper in a variety of beautiful, solid colours. It isn't patterned so it won't be overpowering.

Also the wall shown in the photo is the perfect place for a console table with a mirror above.

I wouldn't paint any of the walls white, i'd have them all the same. I'm not a believer of darker paint darkening a room, if you have crisp white paintwork, doors etc, they lighten the area as will a long pendant light dropping down the stairwell. I like the colours circled red from F&B I particularly like stone blue with white paintwork, that would really make your pictures stand out

Thanks for both your comments. Those ideas are really nice Rachel. We have original parquet flooring in the hallway, so we will be keeping that and getting it sanded (which should make it lighter once the dark varnish is removed). The carpet will be going (I’m sure it was nice in its day!). We were originally planning on stripping back the stairs to have the wooden steps and a neutral/light carpet runner. However, there are so many layers of paint on the steps (some of which we believe is lead) so we won’t be able to strip back to the wood and are just going to repaint the stairs white and have the carpet runner like you mention. I have attached some more pictures of the hallway. The main dilemma, as you say @colourhappy, is choosing a combination of colours which feels welcoming – not too dark and not brilliant white! The areas we will need paint for are: Lower hallway panelling Walls above panelling in lower hallway Stairs and upper hallway wall Picture rail in upper hall Wall above picture rail in upper hall Woodwork (doors etc) There are lots of different areas so struggling to find the right combination!

I tried more colours...all the 'greys' look very blue! Think my favourite so far is the nutmeg white (to the left of the bright white)?

Hi Lou Ella. The nutmeg white does look grey on the ŵall ( and nice) but when I look at images of rooms and the paint on screen it looks a somewhat different colour and it appears to have a pink undertone so may look different with the whole room painted? I'm not familiar with that colour so hard to tell (!) but it should warm the room. As the walls are awaiting a mist coat why not paint large pieces of thick paper or card and hang in different places in the hall and landing (give it 2/3 coats) to see how it changes in the light. I think I suggested you try just walnut before so it may be worth also giving that a go?

Nutmeg white is definitely a more neutral colour, not a grey. It does have a pinkish tone but would say it's more beige. Pebble shore is definitely grey, and a nice pale colour. It goes on really dark though so don't be alarmed when it first goes on!

Wouldn't recommend Egyptian Cotton as it throws out a lilac tone in narrow spaces. My mothers hallway was done in this colour. If it's definitely paint you're looking to use in your hallways I'd recommend Mouses Back by Farrow & Ball; It's a warm earthy tone. Other than that id definitely have a look at Black Edition wall papers.

Sorry Hamford Interiors I don't agree, I have Egyptian Cotton in my kitchen which is a long narrow space. It comes out grey with a beige undertone. Dulux Mellow Mocha is very lilac, so I'd avoid that. I have both colours in my home. Ultimately it depends on the light in your house, it can make colours can look very different, so paint large squares of lining paper with tester pots and move them around the space. Dulux Just Walnut is a good suggestion from Minnie. Best of luck.

Went with the nutmeg white..still got the woodwork to paint white.

Quite light but it's like a stone colour, opens up the hall and makes it appear bigger. Also goes well with the carpet which the other grey colours didn't!

I've got Polished Pebble in my study and it does look bluey a bit under lightbulb, not so much in daylight..im thinking it might be lightbulb.

Mrs McGee, thank you for your reply and apologies for my late reply but might I remind you that this is in fact a hallway; quite a small one too. Hallways tend to have restricted natural lighting, kitchens on the other hand usually no do not. Hence me mentioning my mothers hallway as an example as they are of similar size or so I perceive from the photos.

If the post happened to be regarding a decent sized room bathed with a normal amount of natural lighting (much as I suspect your kitchen to be), then of course Egyptian cotton would be a lovely choice; but it is not.

In a recent interior design project we've used Farrow & Ball Blackened. Although it is grey it has a hint of blue which is nice and bright and would add light to your hallway. The Original Chair Company would highly recommend this.
