help for south facing conservatory roof

I have south facing conservatory to build - half is already under the house eaves. It leads to an inner lounge/dining room - double doors already there. Do I have a flexi fibre glass roof or a solar reflecting glass one? I want it cool enough to sit in in summer, but not to block out light to the inner rooms. Would be installers differ in their advice. Some say the solar glass works well. others say not.

Good Morning Bronwyn.

There are a few different types of solar glass on the market and this might be one reason why you are getting various answers.

In our opinion, we can strongly recommend the PIlkington Activ Blue glass roof for south facing conservatories. This has excellent Solar Heat reflection properties and couple this up with Argon gas in the units, you can achieve a U Value as low as 1.1 and you will get the added benefit of having self cleaning glass.

There are some very poor comparisons to the Pilkington Activ glass in our opinion. We have tested the other alternatives, but the performance of the Pilkington Activ cannot be matched.

The only negative is that you do pay more for the Pilkington brand, but from our experience it is worth paying that little bit more.

Thank you Rob. I've looked on the website - is the other glass better, i.e. solar control glass or sunshade glass?

We used roofrevive a few years ago and the room is useable 3 seasons of the year. Summer is still hot in there but definitely not as hot as it used to be...we have air on which helps but also a south facing garden which doesn't help! RR are now in liquidation though. Can post a pic later when I'm home if it helps?

Hello mrjohnnyd & Sarah W, You're right to think about overheating. It's a huge consideration for home extensions as skylights in a pitch roof for example, add up 40% more light than vertical windows - so yes, they will generate more heat too. There are a few things you can think about to mitigate solar gain in the hotter months: * Internal/external blinds to prevent solar gain. This is the most pocket friendly option * Opt for a glazing that will reflect UV rays * Choose skylights that will open and close, of course. There are slide open and hinged options, and roof lanterns that have opening panes. It's a good job you'll have vertical windows. As you mentioned you can throw them and your upstairs windows open once summer arrives to create a chimney effect. Hello Paul, LVT in a south facing room with 5 metres worth of glazing won't cause a problem so long as you look for two things: We'd recommend going belts and braces and use a high temperature adhesive, like F Balls F48 - click here. You would normally use this in conjunction with underfloor heating and/or when in areas of huge temperature fluctuation like conservatories. We'd recommend going for one of the major LVT manufacturer brands, as they are more likely to have tested their products to be UV stable. This is what will help prevent fading in the sunlight. When you get serious with your supplier to make the purchase (and we would very much like to supply your materials, Paul), ask to see the technical data sheet for your product as you want to see for yourself that the product is UV stable. A manufacturer's data sheet should show you whether it is or is not UV stable. Major LVT brands to consider are: Amtico Karndean Natural Solutions Polyflor Best to stick to a major brand, in your circumstances, as the products will have been manufactured to high UK standards. The cheap and cheerful ones are produced, in volume, in China and do not have such stringent quality control tests carried out. Shrinkage? Doubtful. That "can" happen when using a click LVT but if you use a dryback LVT that must be adhered you won't experience shrinkage, Paul. We're cute, we're cuddly… we're the Flooring Gurus!

If you face south it is rather inevitable that you will be too hot in summer, but perhaps the glass isn't very high quality if you are cold in winter? We had one in our house facing north (also London), and I have to say it was fine in both winter and summer - we had the thickest glass for insulation. Look into better glass for the roof perhaps, and then electric blinds for shade in summer? I personally think the tiled roofs look ugly. Perhaps if the above doesn't seem like to help and you can't afford to replace with a proper extension it would be worth tearing down and replacing with wall to wall sliding doors/bifold? If the space isn't usable, you aren't actually losing anything and you will have more natural light in your home.
