Suggestions to finish living room?

Have just repainted my living room (from what I think was a 30 year old yellowy paint job on walls and skirtings/architraves). Cant afford much but after ideas for how to finish the room? I have a rectangular wooden coffee table that I'll probably be bringing back in but feel like I need something on the walls?
Want to keep it in keeping with the older style home but still as modern as possible. Not sure if I should go with something colourful or keep it monochrome?
Any other hints?
There's a long way to go with the rest of the house so want this to be a bit of a haven.

I would suggest a really large overside mirror on one wall and three large pictures across the other wall.

A rug will also soften the look

Hi, I love your sofas, warm and plush! You really need to get rid of the beige rug as grey and beige don't sit well together. Pick out a warmer more vibrant colour for the rug. Get rid of the black storage units, too dated. Also, to go is the mexican pine tv unit.....again with the brown and grey. You could paint the units off white or change them. You also need to make more of a feature of the window. The curtains need to be plush and thick like the sofa. I picked out on the purple cushions that you have as they sit really well with grey. I've done a little mock up for the 't.v' end of the room and changed the rug, you'll get the idea. Good luck x

But even with teal or orange cushions you won't have to repaint. You'd be picking up colours from your painting. I feel that the ones you found, their beige background will blend in with the sofa too much. For what it's worth, I think your living room already looks quite lovely as it is. Don't stress too much about finding the right cushions. And I would go for white frames :-)

I don't know what you think of this lamp? I love the art, it's really pretty. I like the wood frames they're shown in but brass would work. Just thinking heron/crane/peacock cushions could work with the ginkgo art ( I really like the first cushion with the art, it's from junique although the other 2 from dunelm pick up the gold accents) . I'd just buy 2 of these dearer ones and mix with plain, cheap ones in different textures in different shades of blue and blue green (again would try dunelm)

Catching up on this thread! Thanks for all the replies. Always really good advice. @petersmummy thanks! Yeah I'm maybe overthinking what to put on the table haha. Feels like the consensus is to put a rug under the table. @Resh Thanks! Different opinions are always welcome :) I think you are probably right. It is wood overload. I've went back and forth a few times on painting the windows and panels. I think I ultimately will paint it white to brighten the room, freshen the finish and match the skirting and door. It's just difficult to bring myself to paint over it. Complementing with a different colour could be tricky I think. I'm not so keen on painting the floor or the table. The floor is the same in all the other rooms so I think that keeps things cohesive. The top of the table needs refinished so I could choose a different wood stain. Your home looks amazing!! It's great! I do actually like colour I'm just not sure how to use it haha. @minnie101 wow that was a while ago! But I got some great advice from you and others that I eventually got round to doing. Thanks for your help! :) I remember how it looked when I first went to view the place. I think its going in the right direction thanks to the help from you guys! (attached some photos) Thanks for the photoshop pictures! They are really helpful to see how it might look. Yeah I think there probably is room for a circular or oval rug. The ceiling light I will likely replace with one of the suggestions above - a brass mobile/sputnik style chandelier. Those wall lamps are pretty awesome! They look great. Would have to be fitted fairly high so people can still use the space behind the sofa to walk to the dining area. I don't have much in the way of art so far. I have a print of this on the left hand side of the fireplace. Even though it is a fair size it looks a little small on the wall to me next to the surround and large mirror. I'll check that site out thanks. Vases look awesome! I'll give that a go.

Hi Charlotte, Nice room! Are the sofas staying? If not I would consider a three seater for the back wall and a single armchair with side table for the space next to the door. The two seater next to the door is too big for that space. I can feel a bit of a retro vibe in the room? so maybe in that style. You could add a cube pouffe or two for extra seating. I was just about to suggest that you could have an amazing fireplace as the main feature in the room until I noticed the section of carpet missing. Looks like you had a fireplace removed? I like the side tables I think you need one either side of the back sofa and some lamps. Some more plants, a bookshelf next to the door, coffee table and maybe even a rug. The walls are mostly bare so some artwork, cushions, and a throw would really finish off the look.

I like your colir scheme. Gray and purple are gorgeous. You need more side tables with lamps in the coming corners, alternatively a long lamp.
You need either a big picture or a mirror over your sofa. I live the sun mirrors, they are very cheerful.
I suggest you get rid of most book shelves and LCD unit and invest in one unit for lcd and books that fills the entire wall

Your Purple cushions are a lovely colour this could be continued with lamps and pictures with same colour. If you don't have budget for replacing the pine tv unit you can try painting it using one of the grey tones you have in the room would be good and may be the same for the bookcase.

Hi. What part of the world are you from? In chilly old England, I would put in a fireplace as a focal point and have the TV on the wall above it. I would add throws and lamps, all in rich plum colours and various lush materials, to warm it all up and create a really cosy feel, If you are in a warmer area of the world and you want it to feel fresh and light, I would paint the furnishings light grey or off white and add mirrors and picture framed artwork in soft creams and whites, to reflect the light. It very much depends on the mood you are trying to create. Enjoy
