How much are you able/ prepared to do on the stairs? You could have the steps re-tiled, or carpeted, laid with wood and a carpet runner, and you could install a new handrail if you have a larger budget. However, if you want to work with what you've got, I would focus on the tiles. I don't think the handrail itself is a problem- it could do with a lick of paint, but the tiles are a little dated. You can paint floor tiles but you'd need to be very careful to make sure that they were done safely to avoid slips on the stairs. Alternatively, you could have a stair runner fitted, to cover up most of the tiles, and then put some colourful artwork on the wall at the back to draw the eye upwards and away from the tiles. Good luck i'm sure whatever you chose will look lovely. To be honest with farrow and ball colours, in my experience, you're best to just go for a colour you like as opposed to trying to find a particular colour. In that they change colour at different times of day and in different lights - it's part of what makes them so beautiful but the problem with that is if you are trying to find a particular colour for all of the time if that makes sense? Without meaning to bore you senseless with downpipe, sometimes it looks more grey, other times more blue, then sometimes even green at times. I like this about it but can imagine it may drive some people mad. Pop your sample in you kitchen and look at it at different times. Hopefully you'll like all the variations and will be on to a winner :)

Hi Poppy, Regarding the mantle shelf, they are usually painted the same as the furniture, so it connects everything. I understand to think of it, its seems like a stripe but it does work. Also to help with the dark kitchen cabinets, you definitely need a colour to add the depth and give balance. White will be too stark I would think and as another option to the Purbeck direction, you could try something like Skylight that works amazingly well with Railings Good luck and post a picture of what you choose.

It's about making sure you're not making a dark hole at the end of your open plan space. The floor and worktop colours are the main surfaces that the sunlight hits and so are you keeping your existing flooring/tops or changing it. At the moment, it looks quite a dark, matt floor and so I would suggest keeping the units light to counteract this and bounce light around. However, if the floor/tops are going lighter or with more of a sheen (even carrying through the wood) the dark will look great. Good Luck Emily
