Does anyone know how I can achieve this look with tiles and wood floor

I have seen this look where tiles are combined with wood flooring, however my builder says we would have to have a raised edging, which ruins the overall look for me. We are intending to have engineered wood flooring with our underfloor heating but I'd really like to incorporate tiles either square or hexagonal for added interest and also better durability in the kitchen area, as it will form a large open plan kitchen/living room/dining area. Advice please. Thank you. Ps I don't want to go for laminate/amtico/karndean or tiled effect wood.

Comments (20)Thanks to all who offered advice. The samples arrived and the space invader fabric was our favourite. None of the cube patterns were quite right. Do you think i could skip lining fabric since it is already so thick? I think it might be too bulky for a blind with lining too. The other thing I wanted is some general styling advice. I don't know whether I'm going to be able to pull off the look I was originally going for and i keep getting sidetracked by other things I also like. My original idea was a contemporary classic kitchen with a bit of an edge. So we have light grey shaker doors on bottom, then handleless white slab on top. Flooring probably wood effect herringbone vinyl. Walls will be off white and backsplash behind job will be very pale neutral zellige tiles. Handles will be more industrial style, I like quite a few from dowsing & Reynolds, probably in bronze so quite dark. Then there will be a built in bench with dark blue cushion on the seat and across the back. Table I would like something mid or dark wood and contemporary but I've also liked mid century style ones I've seen. And chairs are undecided but maybe black. Worktops are marble effect Quartz (white with grey veining) and an upstand and sink is undermount stainless steel. I have already bought pendants for above the dining table, they are patterned glass with a black ceiling cord. Comments (14)As this is the shower area, does it re-appear after a shower and, when the wall is drying out afterwards/ I still think it's grout, and would put money on it. Those are some thick joins, plus the faces of the stone tiles are pitted. Therefore, small amounts of grout would have stuck themselves in the little pitted areas. They won't last forever, and will wash out. I don't believe for a minute that silicone was put over the whole surface of the stones. That doesn't make sense at all. You use stone or tile that is suitable for a wet area, not all tiles or stone are. You use silicone around the joins to seal it, not over the whole surface. 8 years agoYou can't lay tiles or wooden flooring on floorboards. Both require a sub-floor to be laid so that it's going on a surface that can't move. Ply is usually used and it comes in different thicknesses. So in theory it should be possible to put one thickness under the wooden floor and another under the tiles to end up with a uniform height. However, it would be tricky especially if you want a hexagonal effect at the join.
It would be better to use the same flooring type with a uniform sub-floor, therefore if you were to choose two different types from Karndean for instance you can have a wood look floor joining a tile look floor without any differences in height. You can do a lot with karndean as the range is so vast.
