Hi again Ramona! Thank you so much for your interest - you have to let me know if you're ever in Wales and let me buy you a drink! We haven't done anything to the room in the last week; a couple of friends came by and said they like it (and then moved promptly to the cinema room which is much more exciting). What we manage to do is actually decide on a design of the shelving/ cabinets going in the alcove; that in itself is a great achievement, as I always tend to like at least 2 totally different designs and then take forever to choose one. Anyway, below are two photos of the style we would like to have. I know you suggested no floating shelves; however I'm not ready to go all the way traditional - I've not grown up that much! I like the clean look in those photos and we would probably go with the black and white scheme. Also, I've decided to use the 'bulls eye' painting on top of the mantel, which would throw out the purple theme and bring a red-orange one! But that is why I prefer the background (walls, sofas) to be neutral - I can then play with different colour schemes without too much trouble, just new rugs and cushions and paintings and you have a completely new look! And that's why I think classic (not traditional, but classic) works best, you can always accessories with whatever's the current trend and then change easily when it becomes dated. I guess living in the UK made me adhere to their way of thinking (although I made an exception with the kitchen!) The other 'close contender' was this other photo - they also have the shutters we would be getting next week. Apart from the high gloss, that style looks more formal to me because the shelves are 'anchored' in the cabinet, not the walls. We haven't decide if we're going to paint the ceiling or not - I think you were right and it would create a bit of drama with the pendant - I guess we would decide after everything else is in place. Hi thanks very much for the useful hints and tips, they've really helped! So far I've done a subtle re-jig of the decorative items on the shelves and thinned them out a bit to make it less busy (and more contemporary). I have added a cushion and throw plus a bit more useful storage baskets and so far I'm happier with it now. I also have to consider the overall flow of the room rather than 1 wall - for example when I walk into the room this wall is on the left and the sofa wall is on the right, and there was a risk that if I added shelves etc on this wall it would then unbalance the look of the room as the sofa walls are so far pretty plain. I'm getting a new sofa next month and when this arrives I'll be able to see the room in its finished form and can make any last minute adjustments!! I want to add some more shiny stuff and will get a nice chrome tray or centrepiece for my glass coffee table. Pffft, this house decor lark can take over your life sometimes :))

Hi. Lovely room and furniture. I'd pull the sofa away from the fire and add a slim black console to balance the tv and fire to which you can add a lamp and accessories and move the floor lamp to the other end. I'd also add a tray on the footstool and just add a couple of books, candle and perhaps a little hydrangea (this is a Kelly hoppen hydrangea as you may be able to tell!). I'd go for an abstract patterned rug as I think it should work with the herringbone, this also comes in another shade of blue but I can't find a pic. A sisal would also work. Agree with large art over your sofa in your colour scheme and a plant, would also add a grate with some logs. The art over the fire looks a little small to me so would try slim candles either side. It may be the camera angle but I'm not sure curtains will hang properly? If not Roman blinds? It would be good to see other aspects of the room, maybe even look at the layout (do you use those doors?) and see if extra cushions are needed on the sofa etc

Hi! Looks good so far - I would think about maybe making the wall behind the bed a feature wall to tie the room together a bit, perhaps with a bold wallpaper like this: Otherwise, maybe some bolder dressing cushions to sit on the bed would bring it to life a bit? They don't even have to be bright colours, just something like this: And maybe consider putting something above the bed on the wall if you don't want to delve into the world of wallpaper/feature wall.
