What type of windows to go for?

We are in the process of gutting a 1900 semi that currently has old sash windows throughout. I had decided to replace them all with new wooden double glazed sash units and am now swaying towards aluminium at the rear of the house. We are having a modern extension and will have bi-folds and more than likely go for a grey aluminium, Should we match all the windows too or stick with timber sashes? Whats the best option of windows for a loft dormer? Not a fan of balconies as I don't like heights but would like to get maximum light in and keep the look quite modern. Thanks in advance :)

We work with high end award winning architects and the current trend generally tends to be traditional timber box sash windows in the original part of the house and aluminium bi-fold doors to the rear kitchen extension. Please see photographs below of the frontage and rear of one of our projects.

I agree with the above, It's much nicer to have original style windows in the older part of the house and make the extension a seperate entity.

I personally have made several roman blinds for kitchen windows and prefer these as they give softer lines than roller blinds, but it depends on the style of your decor to a certain extent. Both the style of blinds in the above kitchens look lovely, because they go with the rooms (the softer edging to blinds on the more trad kitchen, the plain white on modernist one). If you want some color, you can choose the fabric and make either style yourself from a kit, which gives you much more flexibility. Purchased blinds (if they are any quality at all) are much too expensive for what they are, in my opinion!

I think you'll have to go with white or whatever looks best indoors in those rooms. You can always think about getting the windows colour bonded at some point instead of replacing them. Then you can choose any colour for those inside and out! You can paint UPVC yourself - All of our windows inside are painted the same colour as the walls in those rooms so that the windows blend into the walls. They were dark brown / mahogany ( vile ) - Outside they are all sage green. If you're going to paint the frames inside which will brighten the rooms and let you have whatever colour shutters you like, use Zinsser 1-2-3 primer and then paint away.

Sorry for taking so long to reply! I tried moving the desk in front of the window, but unfortunately it did not work - it had a very 'stuck in the middle of the room' feel, and also blocked most of the natural light. The only window is quite low, and the walls are over a foot thick (and I'm on the side of the valley so don't get direct sun in the room very often!). I just can't find a layout that 'works' without blocking something 😔

First, I urge you to buy factory-finished timber sliding sash for the front elevation. I like the idea if contrasting the traditional timber windows with a slicker look on the extension. A Velux-style rooflight is simple and lets in loads of light (remember to get an integral blind), but if you need headroom, a traditional dormer is the better solution. If you want a warmer look and feel for your bi-folds, there are plenty of timber or alu-clad timber products available.
