I'm in a dilemma. Is everyone painting their mahogany doors and woodwo

We are painting our kitchen walls and woodwork. Our home is 25 years old and is predominately traditional and the woodwork is all mahogany. Does anyone still have mahogany woodwork or is everyone painting it?

I'd say if the house is only 25 years old then, in today's terms it's still modern, Therefore, most people will have chosen to paint the woodwork by now. But, hey, it's your choice! Period homes is where you are most likely to see remnants of original woodwork. However, a lot of those get painted now if not all of it, in the most part as it's a dark colour and today's trend is for lighter paintwork on the whole.

Oh I am completely green with envy! To buy a beautiful house and score all that gorgeous furniture - how fabulous! I haven't read all the posts but agree that to paint most of these pieces would be a crying shame. I also agree with having a few antique dealers look at your furniture and assess it's value; then sell the pieces you're not so fond of & enjoy those pieces you love.. At the risk of causing upset to anyone, the only pieces I'd consider painting would be those that are damaged beyond restoration but could still be usable &/or functional.... My head is still spinning at all that fab furniture - IF you could find it in Australia you'd be paying $$$$$$!

Hi Liz, sounds like you've got an exciting project on your hands. My two penneth, for what it's worth, is that hallways are often neglected or left til the end. Some people don't think they are worthy of spending too much money on. However, I disagree. When you first walk in the door, or you move from room to room, your hallway gets oodles of views and movement throughout the day. When people visit - their first impression to your house is in your hallway, so you should start as you mean to go on. So rather than paint over the wallpaper and make do, if it was me, I would bite the bullet and take off the old wallpaper and repaint the walls. Whilst doing it, pay attention to the lighting in the hallway and make improvements to increase the light. I can't comment on what needs to be added from the pictures, but you could consider recessed lighting up the stairs, better quality pendant lights, placing mirrors opposite windows to reflect the light back in. Or why not follow Abigail Aherne's lead and embrace the dark side. Make it cosy, comfortable and a little bit quirky! There's lots to consider, but ditch the paper!! Most importantly, enjoy the process and don't think of it as a chore. It's exciting and the adventure is only just beginning.

Hi, there are some fab wooden doors available online. Price depends on the wood - oak or hardwood the most expensive and oak veneer the cheapest (pine inner core). The prices you are quoting are astronomical! However, I do realise London can be expensive. You can get gorgeous brand new traditional style doors for half you are quoting. My 1930's style front door was £189 (oak veneer over a pine core) and I bought online as the doorway is tiny and I just couldn't find one narrow enough locally. There was a solid oak one for about £500. Once it's painted who would ever know it's not original! My sister got a black composite one and it looks beautiful. Has a wood grain effect and looks very smart. Good luck with your search.

Sorry Tani, I probably wasn’t clear. So if we end up selling and don’t like the painted stairs, I can have a runner made in the carpet we’ll be using upstairs ( there will be remnants and I wouldn’t put a runner on the landing part as it’s a bit of a trip hazard which isn’t ideal on a galleried landing). However if we stay i can add at a later stage the expensive runner we want. obviously I’d rather just pay to paint them though not knowing whether we’ll need to move or not Atm!
