Next to stove, are these cutting boards?

Our kitchen is almost complete and I have a long skinny cabinet that was made for baking trays but I think adding the door can be a problem, thinking this may be an option. If these are cutting boards that were made to fit the cabinet.

Hi. They're actually 2 trays but they could be made as chopping boards.

Hi BFM, just looking at previous posts relating to opening up fireplaces and can't find anything that seems to mirror our current situation. Every fireplace in our new home (and there should be 6!) has been sealed with cement. There is no vent on the inside wall...in fact all there seems to be in the vicinity of where the fireplaces should be are plug sockets. I am absolutely desperate to start opening one up (I'd like to open them all up in time) just to see what they've done. Nothing seems to have been done "correctly" in the house so uncovering lots of mysteries. I'll post a photo example below.

I never, ever change mine. I use a butcher block and a huge thick wooden cutting board, only taking care to keep my fruits from suddenly tasting like onions or garlic. Studies have shown that a wooden cutting board is naturally resistant to bacteria, so I scrape and then wash mine off with soap and water after use. All this absurd paranoia about cleanliness is the product of marketing, not science, and the supposedly more sterile plastic ones are actually much better petri dishes for bacterial growth, which is why they must be cleaned and disposed of regularly. Fine if you want to keep plastic cutting board manufacturers in China working, but not at all safer or cleaner.

Your inspiration photo is good - the dark grey colour and the panelling (paint looks like Farrow & Ball Downpipe to me) would look great on your fireplace wall. Paint the other walls off white or very grey. I would get rid of the fire, it's tiny and not much of a feature, I would put the TV on the wall in place of the fire over a console table which could have lots of lovely things on it. You would then have room for your winged back chair on the wall on the left now the TV has moved. I would give the storage units a lick of chalk paint either in a off white or charcoal grey and change the handles to make it look more boutique and then it's down to the accessories, bring in some more green. I would probably get rid of the smaller unit and replace with a small side table on either side of that sofa with a lamp on each table. Above that sofa I would add a sunburst mirror or a statement piece of art, or a collection of mirrors. Add art to the wall where the winged back chair is in dark frames.
