A focal point to any room, a fireplace gives every space an axis to work off of. But what do you place above it - a mirror, a piece of art, a TV or quite simply...nothing at all?

POLL: How often do you redecorate in your home?

We have been in this house 32 years and have done everything at least once from renewing the roof and windows to digging out the floor, putting in a damp course and installing central heating. The ensuing recoration has been a "classic" traditional colour-scheme of soft barley and sage green to suit the era the house was built. It suits us down to the ground and we are not distracted by outdated decor. We give it a lick of paint when it needs it. The house is the only one in this Victorian terrace to have retained many original features such as picture rails, dado, marble fireplace and ceiling rose, but internal doors were sadly a victim of the dreaded Fire Certificate and other "improvements", which also mean all the features inc. windows and front door were not retained as we would have wished and we have also had to cover the pine floors we so lovingly restored with carpets and vinyl because they needed protecting from high-heels and countless sandy feet. We also dopted the German fashion for wood-chipping and painting what were pretty uneven walls. They have been over-painted so often, the texture is barely visible and it has withstood the test of time. We are in a seaside location, so there has been heavy wear and tear from a couple of generations of holiday making friends and relatives as well as our own family. The kitchen is the biggest challenge being north-facing with practically no light and whilst it was being excavated we made the bathroom into a temporary kitchen, but never restored it, so now we have two showers and three toilets in the house, but no bath! The room is a designated "laundry room" which is also a tool store, boiler and hobby room. The house will soon be on the market, so redecoration will not be our choice. Comments (31)The picture shown shows us a example of a badly installed TV where no thought has been put into the interior design of that element in the room. I can almost guarantee a Technology Advisor was not involved in the project as they would have found a better solution for the finish. Comments (24)Hi. Before 1.5 year ago we had a wonderful neighbours! Was really good friends and we still visiting them and they us. But new owners are nightmare, horrible. They do everything what they wont and no body can help! Build shed along boundaries without asking permission, when we was build fence at boundaries they was demanded fence at 2.5 m high. They smoking meat at weekend day time, knocking at walls in the middle of night, swearing when play games - with open windows, loud music . Just no words! We try to chat with them - but they polish and was just two answers - I do not understand and Its my property I can do what I want! Council was told its both private properties -we cant do nothing! We just wait maybe they decide to move somewhere . But its just one house in community - where bad neighbours-others are friendly and we make bbq together and do children's parties....See More

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoI have a Regency-style girandole mirror with gilt entertwined dolphins above the mantel in my main parlor. I have an engraving of one of my ancestors above the mantel in the dining room. In the lower parlor, I have a great old albumen composite of the officers of the CSS Alabama, which was built in England. One of my ancestors was an officer on board for her entire cruise.

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoMine is spookily very similar to 'Southernpointofview'. Would be interesting to compare our other rooms. It's not clear in the pic but there is a wood burning stove in the fireplace and that 'Perky' of Pinky and Perky puppets fame hangs off the side of the fireplace. In my Regency home I always like to add a touch of humour to the decor. It makes people smile.

6 years agoTo take advantage of the views, I turned an unused bedroom into an upstairs sitting room, but It needed a focal point so I chose a contemporary fire and surround and placed the TV above. I think it has worked well.

6 years agoLove my TV above my new fire. The sandstone fireplace and mantelpiece stop the heat reaching the TV. It has freed up space in my sitting-room.

6 years agoOriginally the most popular item to put above the fireplace was a mirror, typically a wooden gilt frame and fairly tall to compliment the high ceilings of Georgian and Victorian homes.
Judging by the what our customers opt for I would say the mirror is still a popular choice, although perhaps not so ostentatious now. Take this simple mirror in the picture below further enhancing the symmetry of the arranged ornaments.

5 years agoI am lucky enough to live in a flatshare that has a fireplace, even if it doesn't work! I just love the way it brings the room together and encourages snuggling up on the sofas with a nice cup of hot tea and a good book to read! There is something very homely about a fireplace and although our one is bare of any mantlepiece decorations, one of my favorite artworks claimed its spot above it almost as soon as I stepped foot in the house! The color of the marble and the undertones in the paintings couldn't have worked any better if I wanted them to and I feel like the dimensions are pretty well balanced! My flatmates certainly didn't oppose!
