living room rug dilemma :-/

Hi all, this is my first time posting so a little nervous....OK so here is my front room/dining room. I desperately need a rug to go in the sitting area, but don't know which way to go.....either neutral (grey, beige etc based with maybe a geometric pattern or a patchwork style with bold colours so it won't get lost next to the bright sofas. also need help deciding what to do behind wall of turquoise sofa but I'll leave that till another day :-) any opinions greatly appreciated as getting very cold feet!

If you can't find what you want off the shelf you could always pop into a carpet shop and they will have a wealth of knowledge and advice for you. Take a paint sample in and a few cushions and see if they have anything that you like, give them the measurements and get it whipped round the edges. Or better yet take a sample of the carpet home with you to see it in situ.

I'm a big fan of picking one wall to paint a stronger colour and go neutral or off white with the other walls. It is nice to have a colour, so pick something you like and get your accessories in this colour, cushions lamp, rug etc, this will help tie the room together. I'm not a big fan of mixing styles, and would tend to aim to coordinate storage units, picture frames and coffee table etc. Shopping from IKEA is easy but less individual than finding preloved and vintage furniture. Your current coffee table looks retro, maybe that will inspire you?

Room plan and photo's definitely. If the fireplace is in the middle, then that's the focal point, so maybe the sofa could go opposite ( or is the door in the way? )

You have extremely hard geometry in the slate color vertical walls and again in the black and red rectangles in the rug. And then the vertical lime-green curtains. It's all a bit of a hard clash. The beautiful bunch of flowers doesn't stand chance against all the hard geometry and coloring. Replace the rug with a larger neutral rug, a hemp rug would be beautiful and is relatively affordable. While you don't have a coffee table move that little round side table closer to the side of a sofa, put the flowers on it. By the time you've made these changes you may find a direction emerge for you.

Thanks for all of your thoughts, suggestions and kind comments guys! The room has come a long way from the space we started with, that's for sure. We're looking at rugs with dimensions around 2x3m which will allow the front feet of both sofas to sit on top - i vaguely remember reading that being a rule somewhere. We're not set on those two either, they're just examples of what we think we like so if you have any other suggestions feel free to throw them our way! Thanks, Josh

Thanks for the link Minnie it was an interesting read. Maybe I need to buy 2 rugs that have something in common then. As it is the one currently under the dining table is not nearly wide enough according to rug etiquette ;-) I have a 16 month old so possibly lighter colours would not be sensible. What would you do? Ideally I'd like to keep costs to a minimum too

Personally I would go for something patterned, that compliments your colour scheme. Yep - you have spotted that the rug under the table is not really big enough - I only learned about rugs a week or so ago. For the sitting room, ensure that it's big enough to sit under the furniture legs. You have a really nice room and the right rug will really tie it all together. Take you time choosing - no hurry ;-)

Who knew there was so much to learn about rugs! The one under the table was initially by the sofas but was too hard wearing and thin. May just pretend it's the right size to save myself some money! ;-)
Thanks for the feedback, I was planning a nice big rug to go under the sofa legs and out towards the dining table, but then it will finish halfway across the fireplace! Aaah! Decisions decisions! Think I'm leaning towards a geometric pattern now. The colour on the walls is by Farrow and Ball and has the delightful name Downpipe!

Hi Sonia. I agreed with ianthy, just get a rug big enough for the front feet of the sofas to sit on as it will "zone" that area.

I'd go for something with the navy in. A geometric might work or perhaps something similar to a modern persian or ikat. I'd put 1/2 of the navy cushions on the green sofa and perhaps buy a green patterned cushion for the blue sofa? These aren't cheap but a juju hat might work on the ŵall over the sofa? They come in different colours and really add texture, I just thought it might work with the existing style of the room

I love that rug in the link! That would be perfect and a great price! Unfortunately it's a bit small for the area and isn't wide enough to go under the sofa legs.
Think you're absolutely right about tying in the blue and green but with others colours, I think it'll help ground the scheme. Think I need 140-150cm width approximately. Thank you so much for the suggestions!

Hi Sonia, just an idea...if you have a patterned duvet cover pretend its a rug and place it to go under the sofa legs, then stand back in your dining area and see the impact. As the space between the two sofa's does not appear to be very wide (i could be wrong) from the pictures so a larger rug might be too much. Then fold the duvet cover to make it smaller about 6-8inches from the sofa legs and try a smaller size rug. Or take the rug from under the dining table and place it in the sofa area.

This should help you figure out the right size and whether a patterned rug would work.

Can you put a picture of the pattern on the dining section rug please. It should be changed as its too small. But that could be phase 2 of your project.

I'm so sorry Minnie, only just saw the second part of your last comment. I'm definitely going to look into those rug suggestions and I have no idea what a juju hat is but I'm very intrigued :-)
I'm also wondering if a bright cheery rug would work with the the art?:-/ here are some more pics including one with the rug from our snug which is 125cm x 170cm to give an idea of the space. The wall behind the blue sofa definitely needs addressing and I'm not sure if I should move the dark pic and put up a long wooden shelf to display bits on with a floor light in the corner. So many options! (Please excuse the messy corner) also maybe I should move the ottoman? but it's narrow enough to fit and work as extra seating (plus a toy chest and a draught excluder) I could take a pic without it there?

There's a couple of rugs in IKEA that might work. The first one would really pull together the green sofa and wall colour and the honey coloured woods in the room, there's also a turquoise stripe on this rug to bring in the other sofa. The second rug would work well with your blue sofa.

here are some more pics of the rug turned sideways so 170 wide to go under the sofa legs and would need 8ft to reach the (not quite long enough) curtains.Plus a pic of the dining table rug.

The juju hat was the fuschia thing on the green ŵall! I suppose it depends which way you want to go with the room. As its got quite an eclectic feel (but definitely not in a bad way!), maybe opt for mrsmcee's suggestion which will pull ŵalls and the honey furniture together as she said. Or I'm looking at the ŵalls, dark wood, rug, guitar etc and seeing a more moody feel but that could just be me! Does the ottoman fit the other way round as a coffee table (with just a tray of accessories on for easy removal)?

When I started on the room I was leaning towards a Scandinavian noir look ;-) but 3 years on and add a baby to the mix I'd like it to be more family friendly and cosy. The Ottoman does work the other way but my hubbie isn't keen and my daughter likes to play there. In the future I'd like an old fashioned trunk as a coffee table perhaps.

I do like the modern Persian and ikat rugs but they strike me as quite thin and hard. I really want the same look but with a thicker pile. They look so blumming lovely though :-)

This is the whole rug, as you see it's got the blue on. Its stain resistant so hard wearing and practical with kids but low pile.

Oooh it looks much brighter in this picture! Not so sure now. .do you remember when all the programmes finished on TV there was a girl with a chalkboard with what looks like this rug in the background. It now reminds me of this, in the nicest possible way :-) it's probably very practical but I'd like a thicker pile really esp with a clumsy toddler! Thanks again so much for the help though!

Hi Sonia, after looking at the latest pictures you have put - I personally would not go for a rug that goes under the sofa. It will make the space look smaller.

Hi Sonia. If you're looking to add a vintage trunk I might still go towards slightly more " traditonal".

If the rug doesn't go under the sofa, what size do you need as I saw this on French connection yesterday. It wasn't quite what I meant but you could add little touches of orange in cushions to pull it together. Safavieh on Wayfair have a good selection of rugs so it's worth taking a look. If you're worried about your daughter falling you can add an underlay which you can pick up cheaply. If you're worried about spillage then I would go for stain resistant!

Btw, I meant to say if you're desperate for a rug but can't make a decison, why not buy a sheepskin for your daughter to play on. You can then always use it on the sofa or a chair or layered on whichever rug you buy or in your daughters room

Arrrrgggghh! do you still think I should go slightly under the sofas Minnie? I feel like the overall look I want is along the lines of what you've been suggesting. My little one slipped earlier now she's

Lol! It is hard to make a decison. I would just check the return policy of every company especially the postage. If you're unsure it may be better using a high street shop so you can just return in person. I'm a bit 50/50 on the rug size. I would typically go for front feet on but if you look back at your photos (and stick your fingers over the missing half of the rug when it's widthways!) it only seems to make a small difference in this instance but that could be the camera angle. A rug that doesn't contrast hugely with your floor should help with feeling of space. Oh bless her, wood floors are great for kids but not when they fall

I would recommend a nice geometric print rug that includes the colour of the sofa, also with a small child go with a polypropylene which is bleach cleanable.
