What lounge layout? Buying sofas this weekend!

So, at the moment this is our front lounge that we don't use that has all the mismatched furniture in since we moved last Autumn. Shortly it will become our only lounge/snug as we will be knocking through the back lounge into the kitchen for an open plan living, dining kitchen space. So the question is if you could do any layout what would you do?

The only thing that has to stay is the fireplace. The radiator can be moved as we are having new central heating installed. We could add a window seat or have a snuggle seat in the window. There will eventually be alcove units in one or both alcoves with a tv in one of them (or on the back wall if it works better - don't like tv's above fireplaces). I've got a few things going on in my ideabook but would love some more ideas on layout.

The most important thing is to consider scale .think about your space and measure carefully .anything can do after....

If it is definitely more of a snug I'd go for a long sofa opposite the fire, probably a chaise as it may be be more comfy for tv viewing. A window seat would look good and lovely for reading etc. If you're doing bookcases, consider matching but with a shelf left out for the tv. If there's room i might then add a couple of small accent chairs angled in front of the bookcase. If you were to use it formally (I know you said not) but would go for 2 sofas opposite each other at right angles to the fire with the tv opposite the fire. As Tavolla said, do measure carefully! It's good to draw everything to scale or cut out paper templates

I'd go for nothing in the bay except for maybe a low chest, the windows are very long and to close to the floor to stand anything in front of them, without obscuring them. Therefore, if you place a sofa on the long 3 m wall you can then put the t.v / hi/fi system on the shorter, hallway wall opposite, creating a focal point. Place the dining room table and chairs at the other end of the room nearer the kitchen. This leaves you plenty of space to move about. I'd have maybe side tables or a side table near to both ends or at least one end of the sofa to have a lamp for reading etc You could also opt for a standard lamp!

I agree with Minnie. Paint colour last. Try to get swatches of everything and look at them in your home, in different lights (day and night). It's amazing how different colours look in different lights. So what looks like grey in the shop, might look purple in your home. Also, hold the swatches together and hold the swatches in the direction they are going in. For example: carpet horizontal, sofa fabric vertical and horizontal, curtains vertical. Hi Joe, It would be fair to say the cushions do move about quite a bit and I have to nudge them back into position - particular the seat cushions. They probably move about because they're fairly light and hold their shape firmly so they shift around. The benefit of this is that the sofa holds its shape and still looks smart 2.5 years after purchase despite a lot of use. The particular fabric I have is very hard wearing. When you look close up the fabric is quite mottled so it is fairly forgiving. We have two young children who eat and drink on the sofa and the fabric still looks good as new. The sofa is comfy yet you are sat fairly upright, rather than slouching into it if that makes sense. I'm happy with it because I wanted something that wouldn't show stains, wasn't overly expensive (so that we didn't need to stress with the children) yet it still looks smart. I think it really depends on your circumstances and how you need your sofa to work for you.

thanks both. still pondering. pretty sure we won't go formal style, we're not really formal people iykwim! minnie, what would you do with that clear wall in the top photo if we go for the snug option and where do you reckon the radiator should go?

lol! Sorry when I said formal, I meant more is it for entertaining (ie sofas opposite each other so it's easy to have a chat) or just a family chill out room? (Although that sounds as if you don't speak to each other!) Is the door to the room on the empty ŵall or the back ŵall?

I used a masking tape, taping to the floor, and played around with the layout and proportions of the sofa for a few days. Same when choosing a rug, at a later stage.

You should be able to build a seat over the radiator, just not sure how much heat they block tbh. You could add a sideboard/cabinet on that ŵall with lamps, mirror/art or just a collection of art. You have a few choices for sofa layout really though
