Stairs dilemma

I have almost finished decorating my hallway and have taken up the carpet on the stairs and landing. I had thought to put down another carpet, but now I'm wondering about painting the stair
s and landing instead. But I can't decide! The walls are Egyptian cotton, with white on the picture rail and above. I am going to put Lemon Punch on the window wall you'll be able to see as you go up the stairs. The hallway floor is very old parquet that I'm planning on renovating. Any suggestions much appreciated!

Comments (2)Congrats on the new kitchen! It looks great (as much as I can see of it) and I love the wood (oak?) you've chosen and those gorgeous doors. That's a good space for a pantry, as skr01606 suggested. You can go two ways, either for some classic shelves or for pull-out drawers (both would need to be custom made, unless you go for that system of boards on adjustable brackets (like in 2nd pic). Now, if you choose shelves, you could first leave enough space for the dyson and build shelves around it. To use both sides, one could have 'normal' (about 20cm) wide shelves, the other side narrow, spice rack type. If it was my space though, assuming you have enough storage in the kitchen (that was supposed to be a loo, right?) I'd have a 'wine cellar' in there. Comments (5)Here's one we did!We put in a window at the bottom of the stairs and a door at the top! It could be difficult to get a landing in once your'e into the loft, depends on where the stairs have to come up, due to head height etc. However, I do believe that Building Regs require a door and a turn into the loft, so that you can't fall down the stairs if the door's open. Before you go down the route of what you'd like, find out what you can have, that's always my advice. Comments (5)Sorry, the pics all really just looked the same to me - it just is a space that you will chuck things into and folk would see the clutter. I definitely wouldn't put any seating under it as heads will get bumped. If it was me, I'd get it boxed in and then it would be useful storage space without it just looking a mess....See Morej9rob
8 years agoWe have timber stairs, polished with painted risers, see pic. I don't find them too slippery at all. My kids go up and down no problems too. Just another idea for you.... You don't have to paint the whole thing, maybe just the risers and polish the treads.

8 years agoWooden floors upstairs are great unless you have kids, then the noise is deafening! I like the idea of the subtle stripe as per Petronella's idea, we did that in one of renovations 'Contemporary Caramel Stripe' has some very lovely colours in it. At home funnily enough we have a mid biscuit colour carpet as a runner on the stairs and in all bedrooms, landing etc. That has a fleck as per Gillian's idea, so that it picks up on all the different wood tones. That's called Harvest Natural Berber Twist

8 years agoDefinitely go for a runner - it will look stunning! You can then decide whether to add rods or not. They're purely decorative now, they're not used to secure the carpet and there are some great looks.

8 years agoI painted the stairs all the way across as it was just as quick as trying to paint just the edges. I had intended to add a runner but liked the look so much I haven't done. The bottom two stairs are curved and I couldn't work out how the runner would sit over them. I used floor paint but it does need repainting every year or two, so it's not the most practical solution.
