Should I paint the woodwork the same colour as the walls?

Advice please. I am having my hallway, 1st and 2nd floor (3 floor victorian house) redecorated after building work and I can't decide if I should paint all skirting board, doors and stairs woodwork white or go for the same colour as the walls (light grey). I am assuming if you paint the architraves light grey, I would have to paint the doors that colour too? I would like to do something different that the standard white ceiling and woodwork, but maybe I will end up being overwhelmed with grey! Thanks

Colour is always a very personal matter - to express my own opinion, however, I would opt for white (or just off white) for architraves, skirtings, coving ceiling and any picture/dado rails every time. This will, "frame" your wall and make the chosen wall colour really stand out. Wrt the doors - I think you have more options here. A matching white will still look great; picking your original light grey or, eve, a darker shade could also work (difficult to know without seeing the grey!), but care should be taken. White would still be the safest option (and is a classic - see below), but is not the only route.

As another idea - if your doors are panel doors, you could think of going two tone with white and grey to just accentuate the shapes of the frames, but you would need a delicate touch to get the look right

Given the house is victorian I might go white on the skirts as I assume your ceilings are high and therefore painting in the ŵall colour will just extend the height of the ŵall. Do you have pictures?

I’m putting up another pic showing the through flow of my ground floor. It’s all very light walls and darker floors. The big splashback at the end which faces you from the kitchen is pale blue which does tie with the hallway at the moment. Any other ideas?

This look would be rather timeless and easy to re-use when wanting to change styles and colour schemes. Keeping a rather neutral palette, which is what you've gone for is a good idea for the kitchen as to not age so quickly. With the use of colourful accessories and well chosen lighting I think this space could look fab. If you hadn't already chosen your units and had them fitted, I'd have recommended a slightly darker shade to provide some contrast, and a slightly lighter island colour. However, I wouldn't recommend darker walls, purely as your space although being a good size and having some natural light. Hate to throw a spanner in the works but why that wall? To me it looks like the space above your cupboards is crying out for attention. You’ve got a fab space to play with their so of it was mine, I’d match the tiles with paint and use the cupboard tops as shelves for display of lovely ornaments or rarely used (but aesthetically pleasing) kitchen and/or dining pots.....and in answer to the original question have the art wall white. Other than my suggestion if you leave the cupboard walls white then i‘d paint the art wall in a fave colour for impact (I see you have some red stools, go daring!)

If you have tall victorian ceilings and enough light, then I think you can get away with your ideas. It is a very contemporary look, and you see it a lot in Boutique style hotels. I have done it in a couple of rooms that are in dark colours and it looks fab, but I think in a pale grey it could look quite bland and institutional. I would suggest picking a darker tone of the grey for the skirting/bannisters and architraves, and even possibly the ceilings, (dark tones recede and look great against pale cornicing if you have it). Then do the doors white which will be really crisp against the greys and work leading into rooms off the hallways/stairs which will probably be other colours. Best of luck!
