Very small , awkward living room - I don't know where to place things!
Hi everyone - please please help me! I've finally managed to purchase my first home - it's fairly tiny and with a very "retirement home" vibe unfortunately! I intend to paint the whole interior white I think (everything,including curtains, is a very buttery cream) put in new carpet or even some sort of wood veneer floorboards (although it is underfloor heating on a concrete slab - so I'm not too sure if that would work. I like soft greys, whites - sort of parisian apartment/Scandinavian interiors - how that would even be possible in my little unit I have no idea! Any ideas would be wonderful and very much appreciated - especially ideas for furniture placement as the angled entrance and extremely small living space is very difficult! I have absolutely no furniture as yet - starting from scratch. Being my first home I naturally don't have a lot to spend but I do want to buy quality! I just need to work out where to put a sofa, TV, maybe an armchair, maybe some built in bookcases (but possibly no room) , and maybe a wee dining room table near the kitchen. I appreciate any advice!

Comments (11)Congratulations on getting such a beautiful first apartment. I'd definitely start with a sofa and 2 chairs, and NOT a loveseat! A lot of us houzzers are anti-loveseat. Two chairs offer so much more flexibility than a loveseat. I'd place the sofa on the wall opposite the fireplace. The two chairs would go in the window with a small table between them. You said you wanted a "big old sofa". I hope that was just a figure of speech as what I think you'd be far better off with is a sofa that is of a nice size, but not too big. I'd look for one with skinny arms so that you have more seating space which is what a sofa is for, after all! A sofa that is 84" long will fit in most homes nicely. Watch the depth of the sofa too as lots of them have gotten far too deep. I'd go 39" deep max. Remember that this is your first apartment, but not your last so stick with pieces that aren't too big. Pay attention to the size of the chairs also. I'd stay under 35" wide, and again with narrow arms. My recommendation would be solid fabrics for both the sofa and the chairs. You can have fun with pattern when you get around to a rug and pillows. You'll also need a coffee table, plus a table to go between the two chairs. Comments (9)Oh, I was just about to say that I love that idea but then I remembered an issue: there is the radiator where the TV would be and no plug sockets. I don't think it's an ideal place to put sockets either because of the radiator there and the fact there's a bathroom on the other side of the wall (so I'm guessing lots of water pipes). I am a big fan of the whole room being brought into the layout though - my own ideas seem to break it into 2, which I think under-appreciates a lot of the space. Comments (9)Firstly, don't worry, we thought we would be rubbish painting but we ended up doing it quite well!! Also the dark colour but is actually easy in your case, you have the Shelves covering all the corners and joints you won't show any tiny mistakes, just get a few rolls of duck tapes :). Have a go yourself, decorating can be therapeutic. You can always call in the pro if you feel you really can't cope anymore. I think there are two or three general themes to consider then, you can either have the fireplace, shelves and skirting etc al in white, or all in a darker wood colour (mahogany I'd say) or have a mix of white and oak colour. I'm so jealous you have enough floor height to have skirting and the top but painted in a different colour so if it were me I would defo keep as a feature. Shutters will be perfect indeed so I wouldn't do anything for the window while you save up for good quality ones, just watch out for companies like Thomas Sanderson or Hilarys doing 3 for 2 or massive reductions. Obviously, have the shutters in the same colour as the other woodwork. Personally I'm not keen to paint the radiator in the same colour as the wall, I know a lot of people do but for me, it's not like I want or need to camouflage it so people can't see it! I have the same question for the one in my sitting room to be honest, but I have a smaller one so was thinking to get a cabinet to cover it, in the colour we want. Maybe you can put a long shallow shelf above the radiator painted in the same as those in the alcoves?...See Moretamp75
