Kitchen worktop

We are just designing a new kitchen but we can't decide what worktop to choose. So far it has Alabaster Colour kitchen cupboards and pale porcelain flooring with a Black AGA and black American style fridge freezer. We also have curved cupboards. Can anyone help?

Love your kitchen, you’ve done a great job, not only does the kitchen look good, it’s totally practical, drawers are the way forward, even if they are more expensive than cupboards. I’ve just redone a kitchen in a house we rent out, the old one was finally falling apart. I was going to go to Howdens and use the joiner etc we knew, but in the end we used a small local company, which cost us £300 more, but the quality of their interior cabinets and doors was so outstanding, plus they could do everything, including tiling, we went with them. We didn’t change the floor, but did everything necessary, I’m hoping it lasts well and our tenants look after it!

The cost of the worktop depends on what manufacturer and quality you have. There is absolutely no need to replace the cabinets. If you are happy with them, leave them in. We often replace worktops only. You have an electric hob so that’s easy enough to extract and refit (unlike gas where you would need a Gas Safe registered contractor). l would measure up the length. Some are 3m long, 3.6m long or 4m long so work out what you can get out of each size. For instance if you need 3.9 altogether then perhaps the 4m will work out cheaper in the end because you will only need one worktop although the price individually might be more. You may get wall tile damage so be prepared for this when the old worktops are taken out. It’s avoidable. Get some local kitchen company prices.

Amazing! Thank you 😁 We thought it may look odd but it is handy for clearing the worktop space! If we kept the wall cupboard in the alcove above it, I wonder if there is a pull out handle that would bring the contents down so you could access them. Or you know, there is a lot of space under the eaves for storage so if there was a tenant in future, they could store extra stuff in the cupboards and not in the units maybe.

That worktop is solid surface. No cleaning products will take that back to when you purchased it colour wise. Solid surface finishes work differently to laminate. You need to sand it back starting at 80 grit using a sander with a oscillating disc not by hand. Then work your way down from 80 to 120 to 240, 400, 500 and 600 if it isn’t changing colour. You need all the different grits to work it down. That’s the only chance you have of getting the colour back. You have around 5-6mm of thickness to work with and then you are back to chipboard.
