what colour, White or grey windows? Help updating 1970s exterior
Comments (24)We have a very similar style of house and are also torn between playing it safe with white or light cream upvc windows to brighten the exterior or being a little more adventurous choosing grey. We are also having to replace all guttering, soffits and fascia ( we have 3 dormers to front and 3 at the back) so we are wondering about combining grey window frames, guttering and soffits with white fascias and white front door and white garage door. We are also supposed to decide by tomorrow but I am worried that getting it wrong will be a massive disappointment every time arrive home! i wish there was some way to "photoshop" the options onto an image of our house. Sorry not to offer any constructive advice but I found it reassuring to find another house owner struggling with a decision just like me!...See MoreWhat colour to paint my bungalow and windows?
Comments (8)Hi. I love French grey which would work with your roof. Vert de Terre and lichen would also look nice, I'd pick up a few testers to see how they work in the light. I'd try slipper satin for the render which works with all the colours. I wonder if you'd also consider adding shutters to give more of a Cottage feel? You could also add a window box under the right hand window which would balance it with the other window and continue with the Cottage look as would adding a knocker to the front door...See Moreupdating exterior of 70s bungalow. Comments (5)I think your bungalow looks lovely with the painted window frames and the purple and white plants in the front garden. I‘m not sure renewing the guttering would be a priority for me, unless they needed replacing. It all looks pretty good to me but you could perhaps consider painting it the same colour as the window frames. Looking at your garage mock-up I would say this needs some more thought. Imho this could look much better. Admittedly I wouldn’t know how, but I’m sure the clever people here will come up with some nice ideas....See MoreAnthracite grey upvc french doors or white?
Comments (9)Yes, if you just wish to freshen up your windows and they are in good order, painting them makes good use of what you have. If the supplier is reputable with a good guarantee on the product you will be covered against warping and big draughts. I believe that slight ventilation is usually required to avoid condensation. Our timber windows are around 140 years old and still going strong with no warping. I do urge people to consider the health benefits for the family - clean air in your home. In the long run, with timber windows last at least 6 times the age the value for money of timber which outweighs the cost of painting within one lifetime alone. Also timber will not be adding to landfill or use as much energy to create. Finally the character and quality of finish is much different. Here is a comparison for you. According to this timber costs less too. https://www.wwf.org.uk/sites/default/files/2017-06/windows_0305.pdf Hope that helps in time! Thank you for sharing and we hope to see some photos!
