Before/After - A Modern Essex Mansion
This beautiful, modern mansion sits perched on a hill in Essex,
overlooking the Thames Estuary. The generous windows look out over the
picturesque surroundings, while at night the lights twinkle on the river,
evoking the feeling of a cosmopolitan lounge bar. Callender Howorth proudly
takes credit for the design of the project, which perfectly
exemplifies our creative imagination and versatility.
The remodel required a dramatic change so
we gutted the house back to its brick foundations, leaving a blank canvas on
which we could paint a truly modern home. To make the house more conducive to
entertaining, we needed to open up the views of the stunning waterfront
setting. We accomplished this by removing existing walls and rebuilding the
ground floor. This enabled natural light to permeate the space and
enhance the views from the moment one enters the property.
The client requested innovative decor that would impress her guests, while
retaining all home comforts. Our design experts got to work by bringing in
natural stones, solid woods and leather panels to give the home a sophisticated
feel. We utilised bold, yet earthy, tones and kept lines sleek and symmetrical.
Colourful paintings hang on luxurious leather wall panelling in the sitting
room, and are enhanced by rich brown leather sofas.
The house is full of stylish finishing
touches, giving it a spectacular sense of glamour. This type of luxury is not new to London interior designers at Callender Howorth: we have been designing, building, renovating and styling homes and
commercial properties to the highest standards since 1997. The Essex mansion
remains one of the most popular interior design projects in our portfolio.
We worked closely with the client’s brief to
create a laid-back family home that is perfect for entertaining guests in
a sophisticated manner. This project is a proof that, with a bit of
creative thinking and the right design team, it is possible to achieve a

Need help for my enlarged bedroom - Part One
Comments (25)Hi Denise I have just ordered shutters for my house for all the front windows which is costing around £1000 and roughly 8 or 9 square metres I'd estimate. However this is for DIY install shutters from the California Shutter company who have been recommended by a friend who uses them regularly, they aren't arriving until first week of December so I can't vouch how easy they are to fit yet!. They're prices start at £125 sqm in the sale at the moment. http://www.californiashutters.co.uk/ Take a look at Nina Campbell's Pagoda Garden fabric it's similar to your original accent fabric in the photo, although I don't have a sample to hand just now. It looks as though it has the stronger bluer tone you need to stand up to your walls. http://shop.ninacampbell.com/nina-campbell-fabric/autumn-2006/pagoda-garden.html I recommend a sample of a velvet or woven chenille for your footstool such as Osborne and Little's Peregrina F6350-07 or Canaletto F6142-10. These are contract fabrics suitable for upholstery which I can supply. Also Osborne and Little's domestic fabric Brehon Linens in F6520-20 is really gorgeous with lots of blue tones in which I feel would complement your scheme. Comments (84)We have just purchased what we hope to be our last house. It is a very big plot and we are looking to knock down and get planning for a very large house over 4 floors. (12,000 sq ft). We know what we want internally however our issue lies with the external look and feel. My wife wants classic new build, with pillar entrance, sash box windows with stone cills or surroundings (Surrey Commuter belt!). I like contempory white, modern, square, glass walls, feature cladded walls with balconies (Beverly Hills!) Our compromise is classic at the front contempory at the rear. We need help! Comments (2)The planning system in England is not primarily aimed to produce good, imaginative design, but to mitigate against harmful or functionally inadequate development. Unfortunately, limited funding, training and government interest induces some planning departments to err on the side of ill-informed convention. For single-family non-listed houses, there is the option of extending and altering within Permitted Development.
