Elderly Lady's Bathroom Remodelled to become a much safer Environment!
Comments (21)Hello All, Thank you for all your comments! It's great to see how important these factors are to people (especially as this 'Old Age' shenanigans will be experienced by all one day!) With regard to the height of the toilet - the lady in question is in her late eighties, and we worked with her at each stage of the remodel, she tested the height of the toilet to make sure it was exactly where she wanted it and where she felt comfortable (the same with the grab handles). We also put the basin on a reinforced frame, so that she can use that as support, if needed. I think it must be the angle of the photograph as there is plenty of room to manoeuvre between the WC and the shower screen. Concealed cisterns are great for a project like this as they are such a space saving design. Using a reliable and recommended brand such as Gerberit puts your mind at ease that nothing should go wrong - especially if you use skilled plumber/tradesmen. Obviously nothing is perfect, which is why if anything should (and it is rare that it does go wrong) they come with a 25 year guarantee. You will also find that a maintenance hatch might be useful, and cause less stress if anything should go wrong. We have been fitting these types of systems for well over 20 years now and (*touch wood*) have not had a single problem! Importantly - Concealed cisterns and wall hung WC's provide the ideal easy-to-clean, and extremely hygienic surface. There are no obstacles to clean around or cisterns to clean under, just uninterrupted floor space, which can be cleaned easily in one go! For a project like this, one of the biggest advantages of concealed cisterns that are coupled with wall-hung WC's is that the user can adjust the height of the toilet to suit their particular height requirements. So often, floor-standing toilets don’t accommodate very tall, short or elderly individuals, making them uncomfortable to use. Other advantages are, of course, aesthetics, noise reduction, environmentally friendly, they can take more weight and are therefore stronger, you have a lot more design freedom in planning a space, finally they are state of the art, and more durable nowadays. The shower seat is not fixed, so she is able to move this in and out with ease! Having lived with the original bathroom for about 50 years our client wanted a change! She wanted a very clean, modern, bright, and un-cluttered space. She didn't want anything on show, and wanted to walk in to a serene and soothing space! She has a lovely vase of bright flowers on the window sill, as a finishing touch and that's as far as the 'accessories' go (I did spot some orange towels, so that gives a splash of colour!) But, as always, design is each to their own! Thanks again for all your comments, this project was a first for us regarding the clientele and we learn more from each and every one. Comments (10)Thanks all. 1. A carpenter/fitter is coming around on Sat for the kitchen - I'll ask him for a quote for this too. In the meantime, I've been googling/thinking, and saw this from IKEA: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/washstands-taps/wash-stands/fullen-wash-basin-cabinet-white-art-70189041/ (& pale green countertop: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/washstands-taps/wash-stands/viskan-countertop-pale-green-art-70354804) I just need to remove a slice of the base at the rear for it to be level with the top of the basin. Hope that doesn't look weird. 2. Will paint the door frame - satinwood or similar. Easy one, that. :) 3./4. Will look at the navy/teal/dark grey wallpapers and paint. I think a combination of them may look really good. Have requested some samples - just waiting for them to arrive now! Great. Can't wait to get going now....See MoreBotched bathroom job
Comments (4)Hiya, Sorry to hear you're having problems! Fitting/Tiling is a really tough job and changing half way through can have so much of a knock on effect and with fitters being booked 6 months, they can't afford to change jobs in between. That being said, you are the end customer, you should have what you want. In a similar problem, I had a customer who came to me after they bought nickel brassware everywhere but ordered chrome trims by mistake. The fitter fitted them and then obviously they looked wrong. When she wanted them changed he said it wasn't possible as 'they don't do that trim in nickel' ... basically trying to pull wool over her eyes! The fitter ended up redoing it but it did cock up the next 2 months of jobs. Depending on what you paid (Fitters in Bristol, UK tend to be £6000-£8000 for a good 10-14 day job) depends on what finish you get. I know people that can do a bathroom fit for £1500 but I wouldn't be expected all the extra thoughts and planning to have gone into it. With the silicone - Usually white is used to match with the grout or most fitters would nowadays use a tile trim of some sort just to guarantee themselves. It should last atleast 15+ years. Hope this helps!! :)...See MoreLast minute wobble - loft bathroom?
Comments (3)My son is also planning a loft conversion and is pondering the same question. For you I also think number 1 is the best. My son has decided to go with just the loo and vanity basin as he has 2 showers elsewhere in the house, so perhaps that’s another option for you....See MoreSonia Bhayani
