Matt or gloss kitchen. What to choose?

I need to make a choice soon and I am struggling to make a decision.

I really like the idea of gloss - light grey for wall units and appliance housing, dark grey or indigo for base units.

However, our builder showed us a finished kitchen in his workshop yesterday - a beautiful handmade kitchen painted indigo blue.

I'm assuming that a painted/lacquered door means that the lacquer hardens to make it hard wearing and that the lacquer can be different ranges of gloss? So it could be matt or gloss.

I like slab doors for the units and I'm thinking that they would look better if they were glossy.

As for cleaning. Well that seems to be confusing as some people say gloss is a doddle to clean (what are they doing right?) and some say they're nightmare to clean (what are they doing wrong?)

Having looked at both in showrooms, the fingerprints on the matt ones almost look like greasy, absored fingerprints. Couldn't wipe them off with my fingers but could rub them off the gloss.

Would really welcome advice/thoughts.

Hi Angelina.

We have this discussion with most of our clients with contemporary kitchen designs.

To be honest, both would look great! Especially finished in a light grey... this colour will allow you an easy life (cleaning and maintaining) with either choice. Naturally, gloss slabs are easier to maintain (especially in lighter colours), but I can't see you having any problems with a satin matt finish - showrooms aren't really a fair reflection on your own personal kitchen.

Gloss will of course allow light to bounce around more in the room, which can be great if you are trying to open up a space... but at times it can be too much and this is sometimes where a matt finish is preferred.

I think it depends on the style of the kitchen and the colour - having a traditional style of kitchen with units and a more traditional layout may not suit gloss as well a sleek modern design and a white or more neutral colour. There obviously exceptions to the rule like bright orange! Great it gloss streamlined but try it on a matt shaker!!! ;) Therefore, like it most things in interior designs, everything is based on balance and complementing every element to create your over all look :)

Before you decide, also consider if you need the light to bounce about a bit more - ie if it’s a darker room - then having gloss will bounce light around better than a Matt finish would do. If you have toddlers then an easy to wipe off gloss surface might be easier to thoroughly clean. If you have pets - same thing applies. Flat Matt is preferable to orange peel Matt .
