Kitchen Island advice

We will shortly be moving into our new home and we have budgeted for knocking out the kitchen wall to make a kitchen diner living area with an extension. We have a rough idea of the kitchen layout out but are undecided on the island. Should we put the hob/sink in the island or leave just as a workspace? Any ideas or experience are appreciated.

Personally, I have the island as a prep space with nothing else on it - but - also like cooking on it with a plug in Grill occasionally, for hot off the grill prawns etc when friends come round as a snack rather than a full sit down do !
Don't see a sink in the island as such a social place but can be useful if it frees up an outside wall for the hob/cooker for easier outside venting, or gives you a better view or as a prep sink in addition to the main sink ... So basically it depends on you - how you want to use the kitchen - and what works with the rest of the layout too ! ( in my opinion !)

Hi @shanagarry80, thanks for your comments! I'm not at home right now so I can't be sure how big the extractor fan actually is but it is over a 90cm hob and oven, so must be at least 90cm. It doesn't look particularly large in situ and the inbuilt lights are very good for illuminating the cooking area. Have a look at Gutmann's website; as I said in one of my earlier comments, other companies do make similar extractors but our kitchen people thought this one best, however our kitchen is now 3 years old and a lot can happen in that time! Hope you have fun designing your new kitchen!

How do you plan to use it? How many people typically at a time and each doing what? How do you want it to feel? When you're cooking, sitting on the sofa, eating at the dining table, or sat at the island/peninsula - how do you want to feel at each space? If you can answer these questions then this will help you identify which is better. Hi. I'm trying to draw an island in the kitchen were 2 people can sit and eat. My problem is that the sink and dishwasher draining is already build under the floor, as you can see in the picture, under the place of the island. Do you have any idea on how to design two seats were 2 persons can eat ? I want to keep the two chairs somewhere in the kitchen. Thank you a lot.
